Has anybody tried ICSControl with a Cradlepoint? Could it be used to get around the lack of support right now? |

Hello
First timer here with a silly question that doesn't seem so obvious after scouring the forums for a bit. Sprint does not officially support tethering with a modem without subscribing to an additional 40-60$ a month.. but is it my understanding that via one of these below routers, you create a "hotspot" and are allowed access to the Mogul's data stream by any other devices? |

No hardware required. Run WMWiFiRouter on your mogul and it becomes a wifi hotspot. The hardware router would be nice ou want to use it to replace an existing hardware broadband router and connect to a wired network.
I'm disappointed that the cradlepoint router doesn't actually come with a cradle. |

I use a Cradlepoint 350, but I have tried the WMwifiRouter.
There are strengths and weaknesses to each approach:
WMwifirouter is pretty clever, it works pretty well too. However, there are some issues. First, it makes your Mogul hot enough to cook flapjacks on. I have to wonder how long the unit will last running that hot, so while you're deducting that 40-60 bucks for PAM, add back on a few bucks a month for insurance.
Next, it creates an ad hoc network, and most computers are a bit fussy about connecting to them. No big deal, but there it is.
Also, while your unit is running hot, it may also be discharging. In a few tests it seemed to discharge my phone's battery completely when I thought it would not. Other times it managed to hold its own while connected to a power source. In any case, in my limited testing I never saw it charge while sustaining a network.
If your not near a power adapter your network connection won't last long. With Wifi turned on and transmitting, your phone will likely run out of gas.
Finally, if Sprint decides to, it can probably find a way to disable the software product.
The CTR 350 requires PAM...at least it does if you don't want a huge data bill. That means an extra fee per month. It also means you're getting a
standard 802.11 network rather than Ad Hoc, which is convenient. Another advantage is that the unit can trickle charge a Mogul while the network is running, although it is possible to discharge. Make sure you turn off other apps and power down the screen.
While the unit is charging on the router its running quite cool, and you'd think that nothing much was going on, on the phone. I have to believe that is much less stress on the Mogul than the software solution.
You should be able to run the unit a long time.
All in all, if you want a dependable portable solution, Cradlepoint is the one that will do it, and do it in a way thats legal, and leaves your phone smiling.
OTOH, WMwifirouter is a cheapie software solution that lets you accomplish essentially the same thing. Its legality is questionable though and if used all the time your unit might end up deep fried. _________________ Mostly Harmless |

My phone's never run that hot with WMWiFiRouter... even if it burns out eventually (which I doubt), I'd buy another brand new one off eBay where I got this one for $280.
AdHoc Problems? Never had one.. Don't even know what one would look like.
Proximity to a charger? The only reason to run WMWiFiRouter is to use WiFi with my laptop, which has a USB port, so I'm always close to a charger.
The only downside I can think of to WMWiFiRouter is the lack of security... No WEP, nothing... You can't even change the SID as far as I know... maybe they fixed that in one of the recent updates, but not in the version I use.
Legality? No law against using your phone Sprint might not like it... but my Vision account says "unlimited data" on it.... and I'm not tethering, or using my phone as "a modem"..... |

Chris, I'm surprised you haven't seen the hot issue. I have two Moguls and both run very hot with this product even after disabling wifi boost. Read feedback from other Mogul users with the router, and you'll see the problem...if it really is one... is well known with the Mogul. I've no idea what it means for the life of the unit, but at 280 bucks a pop, I admire your notion of disposable...lol. I went ahead and insured my units with Sprint.
I haven't found Ad Hoc a problem to use, only that neither of our notebooks will connect to it automatically, even when set up as automatic. We have to select and connect manually Whereas with CTR350 it connects automatically.
It sounds like you have an early version of WMwifirouter, since later versions do support WEP.
As for the legality, I'm guessing my law degree is just as good as yours, but the point is that Sprint is losing an extra fee when you use your phone to make with the wifi rather than buy their full metal jacket PAM service. I'm guessing that if they so choose they can break WMwifirouter with an "update". Even if true, if Sprint employs their usual alacrity, you have roughly 5+ years of use without issue, and EVDO may be a memory by then.
All in all, WMwiFiRouter seems okay for short term use, but to leave it baking all night long while I download (perfectly legal) multimedia? Not for me. Each to his taste, but I'd rather use the CTR if EVDO as my primary Internet connection. _________________ Mostly Harmless |
