Well, I am an idiot.

All this time, I was thinking that my Novatel S720 card was a 54mm Expresscard - so I made sure my new laptop could accomodate that. I even rejected some PCMCIA-only machines.

Aaaaaaaaaaand the new machine arrives, and no matter how hard I push, the S720 just won't go in all the way.

Guess who just learned that the S720 is actually a PCMCIA card and not an Expresscard?

Sooooo, I am an idiot. That matter is not up for debate.

But I'd like to know what my options are now. The obvious choice is to buy a new card, but I'd really rather not go into another contract - and I'd prefer to not pay full price for a new card. In hindsight, I might have just ordered the embedded EVDO card.

Are there any other options for me?

you are exactly the kind of customer for this:

"3GStore Re-Certified" U720, PX500 & AirCard 595 EVDO Devices Now Available

get a reconditioned u720 from 3gstore for $129.99

don't forget that if you were thinking about a router, and you buy a cradlepoint at same time, you get $50 off the combo!

Are you saying that only idiots buy the re-certified cards?? Smile

Thanks, I'll look into the performance of the U720.

Take a look at the latest auction prices on eBay for the EX720 & S720 by searching "novatel ex720" and "novatel s720". You can buy one and sell the other for about the same amount.

Had the same experience with a Pantech PX-500 when I had to replace a failed Acer notebook with a Gateway machine that had only an ExpressCard slot.
The solution was an ExpressCard to Cardbus adapter from Addonics. Around $80 with shipping, and it worked the first time without having to install drivers.
