I have one data account with Alltel for $60 per month. I'm happy with it.
But sometimes I could use two of them. Is there any way to get a 2nd one for less money, kinda like the Family Plan for phones?
The 2nd one probably wouldn't be used much, so it could be a case of "easy money" for Alltel. |

| Get a router and share the connection all you want. |

Do you want a second "line" for travel while the first stays home (I think you said you were planning on getting a router in another thread)?
If you have an Alltel EvDO phone you could add the $25 unlimited data plan to your phone for the months you travel then take it back off when you're not. Phone tethering may not be as fast as an air card but it's more convenient in some ways.
Edit to add -- I'd like to see them offer a family data plan, too. Doubt we'll see it anytime soon though. |

Sorry I didn't spell it out ... I didn't ask how to share an existing connection. I already have a Cradlepoint and enough other types of wired and wireless routers to fill a shall dumpster. I asked about how to get a 2nd data account (device).
I've heard the phone-based data doesn't really work very well. Or not very fast, anyways.
I can get additional phones for $10 on my voice plan. Just wish they'd do something similar for data devices. |

Depending on how you plan to use the connection a tethered phone is not that bad -- there are some folks here who have posted very respectable speeds (dls above 1200 kbps). Your OP doesn't describe the intended use for the second line (check e-mail from restaurant or online game in hotel room or....). A phone tether could be sufficient several types of temporary use so that's why I suggested it.
Maybe we'd see family data plans if Alltel had a 5 GB limit since you'd be sharing a finite quantity among devices like you do with phone minutes. |

Personally, I think I'd have to vote against the family plan then . . . . . . . . |

My use for the second one would be lightweight stuff. Mainly so I can get Internet access when onsite with a client when it's not otherwise available. Or When I'm traveling.
Unfortunately, my voice service is from AT&T/Cingular (they have the best plans here) so I may have to see what they have for add-on data. |

I've got the Blackberry Pearl and using it as a tethered modem I can get download speeds of up to 2.2 mb (220 KB/s), that's always when phone traffic is low (late at night, weekend mornings, etc.), during peak usage times I'm getting around 90 to 100KB/s. Now all of these speeds vary widely and those are averages, during the day it can run 30KB/s up to 150KB/s and then back down again with the avg. of 90 to 100. I get a pretty good signal and can tell the difference when I don't have a strong signal.
I sort of doubt that the dedicated modem would get me any better result, a voice/data network is always going to give voice the highest priority. |

Is it true that you have to pay additional to use the Blackberry? I hear there is a usage charge other than what Alltel charges for normal phone service. A friend of mine has one which isn't activated because he said that you have to pay an additional usage to Blackberry. _________________ Ron |
