staylory, Access is another service and isn't the same as unlimited internet access. If you notice they don't mention a computer at all on this page that you show.

Access provides regular phone users to go to several places, including the internet. You should have a Access button on your screen or on the menu of your phone.

"technically" i can't use alltell's EVDO for Games or Youtube???

Unlimited Axcess Broadband and MobileLink services cannot be used for the following:
1. Up/down-loading or streaming of movies, music, or games;
2. With server devices or with host computer apps, including web camera posts/broadcasts, automatic data feeds, VOIP, or file sharing;
3. As a substitute or backup for private lines or dedicated data connections;
4. Peer-to-Peer (P2P) file sharing.

I've been trying to decide between alltel and Verizon and that's a deal breaker for me. Yeah Verizon has the 5GB cap but at least they let you surf how you want to surf.

Anyone out there that does game with Alltel anyway??? if so have they said anything.... have they changed your service at all??

Alltel doesn't have anything in place to prevent you from doing those things, basically they don't want you hogging all the bandwidth making it unusable for others, and video streaming, P2P, and hosting your own servers can take up quiet a large amount of bandwidth. They say you can't do those things just to cover their butts if they shut you off for disrupting the network. Originally Verizon had this same policy, then they just put a cap on how much bandwidth you can use. The only reason why I went to Alltel was for the unlimited data plans. I hope they get 4G speeds when it is available (and keep it unlimited). Anyone know if I have to pay more to use my Alltel internet outside the USA?

Alltel Wireless via a data card is not unlimited. This was changed the fall of last year. You can go to their website, pull up plans, select wireless internet, full details, and see unlimited data was removed (It was previously unlimited). The only TRUE way to get unlimited data is to buy a smart phone and add the plan as an add-on. 'The National Unlimited Data, Office Sync, and BlackBerry plans are add-on options for customers who choose to pay full price for smart devices. ' The brochure terms in the store state there is no CAP, but they can throttle / charge you at any time they think you are using the plan more than they think you should. So it is 'unlimited' until they say your usage is excessive. At that point, according to their terms, they can do what they want to with your service. If you're roaming, they will sure nail you or at least call / nasty gram you (personal experience nasty gram). The store people will tell you its unlimited, but its technically not with the standard data card plan.

If they require me to purchase a smart phone such as HTC Diamond to be a true unlimited ISP I can go along with it. I need a new phone anyway.

However with verizon taking over and capping everyone at 5gb this is probably all moot.

So what is the data limit then? The representative from Alltel could not find unlimited in the contract nor could they find a stated limit when I asked earlier this month.

That's not the point.

There has to be a quantitative amount of data that they allow you to download. To me, if a contract does not state the amount of data that can be downloaded without overage charges or that the plan is unlimited, then the latter of the two prevails. Why would Alltel not state a limit if there was actually a data usage limit with any of their plans? It would be irresponsible from a legal standpoint for a company not to state concretely whether using a certain amount of data will result in overage charges.

Even their Acceptable Use Policy seems to confirm my theory. Can anyone show where in the contract it says there is no limit? The representative that I originally met in the Alltel store said that their wireless broadband cards are unlimited [in accordance with the AUP of course] unlike other carriers. Or can anyone show me where it says there is a data limit? In the above post, does "not unlimited anymore" mean that they now have to abide by the AUP while using the internet on the card or is there an actual, numeric data limit on the wireless cards that Alltel seems to hide from its customers?

What about using your smart phone as a modem? Or Smart Phone tethering?

You can use the smartphone as unlimited right now. I 'queried' the people at Alltel about the smartphone. I purchased 2 smartphones but the website said unlimited data ONLY ON THE PRIMARY LINE. I got worried about my second. I went to the store and had a 'reckoning' about these unlimited data discussions. I asked him point blank about the data cards. He said they fall under Alltel's acceptable use policy and are not unlimited, but as long as they did not affect the network, they would not be messed with (just as confusing), BUT Verizon WOULD be limiting them soon. He said the 2nd smart phone IS unlimited although the website says primary line only. He could find NO CONTRACT documentation about the data card or the second smartphone being unlimited. I emailed Alltel CS about both. Same answer about the data card, BUT they also told me the 2nd smartphone was unlimited. Yea! The Alltel receipt from my Alltel retail outlet mentions unlimited nowhere... maybe diff stores give diff printed receipts. Who knows with this confusion..

Okay, let me rephrase the question.

Has anyone been charged any overage charges for using their wireless broadband cards over the last several months? And if so, when did you contract with Alltel for wireless broadband on their network?

Im on my 2nd 2 year contract with them.
It's been totally unlimited.

I work online with photography - teaching it and lots of photos uploaded and downloaded. www.portranet.com

I also as a pro photographer - upload hundreds of photos every day that I shoot to my lab.

I use a router - my wife does all her email and browsing on her computer as well.

Here's the biggy - my son uses it via his xbox to download movies and torrents and plays online games via xbox using it.

I also play guitar and use yourtibe heavily to view songs and view guitar lessons. On my 3rd year - never a complaint or extra charge.
The machines in the house are on 24hours a day - 7 days week - connectied via router and often doing things online. (my son often downloads over night) he also downloads tv show streams of shows we miss. They've been great - however the modem has been a pain (*) bought through alltel. I just ordered the cradleponint from 3Dstore.

hoping that solves router disconnect problems. With the UM175 direct in any of the computers connection is great.
