By chance today i found out that alltel offers wireless in my area and i am excited that in the next week or 2 i will have the cash to sign up for it. Ok here are the questions i need answered so i can get in this and get the right stuff the first time around and not waste any money as cash to waste is something i dont have.
1. The person at the desk in the store told me i need to buy a air card for each computer i will be using for my connection, for some reason this does not sound right to me. So is there some kind of router i can get to hook up 4 computers without buying 4 air cards? 1 will be a laptop i would like to take anywhere in the house, the other is a computer used in another room and the other 2 are computers used side by side.
2. Can i take my laptop anywhere that has an alltel tower and get my connection, another state town etc?
3. If i have 1x and 2 bars on my cell phone in my home, do i need to buy a booster, if so what kind of booster should i get, 2 computers have windows xp and the other 2 have vista so i would need one that can work with both windows formats.
4. Would it be feasible to connect in a group with 6 Everquest accounts, and 2 accounts on at a time for raiding in Everquest, with under 400ms lag in each situation?
5. Will i need to find some way to block my IP address from being "tapped" and "probed" by others trying to link up to my connection? if so how do i do that?
6. I dont know if i am leaving out anything so if i missed some questions that i should have asked feel free to fill that info in for me also.
Also a pre-emptive thanks to anyone who offers the answers i need, it will be appreciated. |

Here are some answers to your questions
1) No, you can by routers. The owners of this forum sell them, and i plan on buying me one in the next week when i update my razr for a UM 150. There are many, but if you use this chart it will make things easier: http://www.evdoinfo.com/component/option,com_wrapper/Itemid,115/
just look at for the device you are planning on using and choose a router. I have heard that the cradlepoints are one of the best, followed by kyocera's
2) yes, anywhere there is alltel in the us, you can take it. I would suggest to not take it out of the US though, because there are fees involved.
3) I would look at the map and see if evdois near your area: http://content.alltel.com/business/enhanced/mobilelink_coverage.jsp
if you are close to the light blue it might be worth the cost, i personally have little experience with antennas.
4) I am able to play WOW, but have not played in months. EVDO is not the best for lag, and it depends on your situation. The lag is bad, but wow was still able to play.
5) The router you chose should have security features available.
I hope this will help you, if you have any more questions just ask. I have been a happy evdo customer for 6 months and have learned a couple of things along the way. |

So i plug my air card into the router and it divides the signal up among the computers in the house, and then when i want to travel i just take my air card with me?
What if i enter into another cell providers area, do i get charged roaming for using the internet in there area or will it just not be available? |

someone might want to help me out, but from what i understand your card will first look for alltel's service, then it will roam automatically to a sprint/local carrier. As far as i know there are no charges to roam and the 60 dollars a month is unlimited in the US. |

This is correct. If you're not in Alltel's native coverage area you'll be able to roam for free on Sprint's EVDO network. If neither Alltel nor Sprint EVDO is available in the area you're in then you'll be down to 1xrtt which pretty much covers the USA. 1xrtt is much slower than EVDO but still 2 to 3 times faster than dialup. |

Ok i went and looked at routers and booster's but i didn't see any with alltel listed, only stuff like verizon and sprint, so i am not sure what to get.
Can someone recommend a good booster antenna, router, and air card to get that works with alltel, windows vista, windows xp and windows 98. I need one that will work for all that combined and ones that will work good being as i have no clue what to look for to determine how well what works and what brands are trusted to be good equipment.
Also if i buy from this website and the signal dosent work well in my area like i hope it does can i return the equipment within a certain time period?
I have read something about buying a diffrent air card and you dont have to be bound by the 2 year contract with alltel, can someone also explain that in lamers terms how that works so i know what i am talking about when i talk to the person in the store if i decide to go that route? |
