Any conjecture as to whether the new 700w will be a useful alternative to a PC card with a Powerbook? Will Bluetooth be a throttle to throughput, and would one therefore need to use a wired tethered solution with the Treo?

We will have to wait and see.

Bluetooth 1.0 (in most phones), cannot keep up with EVDO, you will get a maximum of around 140K when going through Bluetooth, even if you are in a 400K - 700K area.

BlueTooth 2.0 does have the bandwidth to handle EVDO, but I am not aware if any phones have this yet.

Is this the first Treo with windows? It didn't hit me until I saw the press release of Verizon, Palm and Microsoft making an announcement together.

Yes, it is the first Treo with Windows Mobile. I think they were forced into an early announcement. Strange that they would announce something that can't be obtainable until next year. I suspect there will be several more PPC EVDO phones released before 2006.

The best place to find this kind of answers would be at www.treocentral.com . It is a specialize treo info board much like EVDOinfo is to EVDO.

^Bummer about the 240x240 display. The standard is 240x320 for PPC and the Treo 650 is 320x320.

Also, will Verizon allow tethering as USB modem?

Three more PalmOS-based Treos expected this year as well with EVDO.

This person claims to have a 700w...

Visited my Verizon store today and reviewed the 700w. Great unit with everyting I want...EXCEPT...apparently if a user wants to tether this device to a laptop you are out of luck. Cannot use this as a Modem. With a data/voice plan at $109.00/month (1350 minutes unlimited data) they also require you to purchas a separate data card AND another data plan to use in the Laptop. WOW...not a good deal!!
Looking for a Windows 5 device with EVDO that can tether...any ideas?? Don't like the Sprint 6700 device.

Walt Mossberg gave the 700 a pretty poor review, saying it has a washed out screen among other things.
He likes his 650 better than the 700.

The Motorola Q will be a great competitor.

I received my Treo 700 this afternoon (ordered it immediately when it was released).

First experience that I was not impressed with is that when accessing web or email, any phone call that comes in is routed to voicemail. This is something that I was not used to as the GSM version of the Treo 650 will let calls come in at all times. In the event you were doing some extended web surfing or answering several emails and a call came in, you could answer the call, hang up and pick up right where you left off.

The antenna adapter Wilson part number 358502 that fits the Treo 650 works, however it is just a little bit too small, so the adapter will fall out easier than the snug fit it has with the 650. The adapter will be fine until one is made for the phone specifically.

The jury is still out at this time, but I can tell you that I miss the resolution of the 650 and noticed the difference right away.
