Well, I finally made the move to EVDO and dropped Satellite. I'm not sure I made the right decision. I purchased the Novatel sled for the KR1 and everything works. However, my EVDO connection drops all the time with the KR1. I know its the router because the card runs fine in my laptop for days at a time with no drops. I have disabled DHCP and wireless on the router, only using it for EVDO. I am running the 010 firmware and from what I have seen on these forums, upgrading to 011 won't help. I am now having to reboot 10-20 times a day. The reboot on the router management screen will not work. I have to physically unplug the power cable from the router. I am now considering a Cradlepoint. Does anyone have suggestions for a workable, stable solution for the Alltel KPC680?

Hello TheCodeMan;

I'm like many others in this forum: EVDO is my only internet alternative, so getting a good EVDO setup is vital to me (I'm employed in the computing industry and need good internet/vpn access.)

You can improve the performance of your KR1/KPC680 by ditching the Novatel sled and getting an Expresscard-to-USB adapter. Yes, I know it seems sloppy to do this when you've got a nice PCMICA slot to use with the KPC680, but I got better performance and reliability using the USB adapter than using the Novatel adapter in the PCMCIA slot. It's not perfect (connection will drop about 3 minutes into session, but after a power cycle, I'm good to go.) The KR1 seems to be designed to behave better with something plugged into the USB slot rather than the PCMCIA slot.

Now: this won't get you "perfect" service out of the KR1. there's much left to be desired in ths product. But it will work and it will get you on the 'net. Good luck!

The Kyocera KR2 is now available and takes care of most of these types of issues. It has a native ExpressCard slot that works with Alltel's KPC680 out of the box.

Your statement almost makes it sound as if Kyocera new of the issues and said screw the KR1 bunch and the troubles they accrued. They should at least have a very generous ‘trade up’ program Wink Got a shipping address for it? I’ll go dig that nightmare of a router out of the shed and box it up. Laughing

All fooling aside, it was a night mare with PC Cards (the ones that it would run at all) but it was a dream with a USB720 plugged in it. Never even thought of messing up. I plan to give it to someone with a USB720 but no way to a card user. I finally got around to tricking out a WRTSL54GS and the USB720 performs approx 25% better in it vs. The KR1 so it hit the shed again.

I'll second you on those comments Rangerw. My experience with KR1/KPC680/Novatel sled was very similar. I could get on the 'net, but not for very long - LOTS of fumbling, power-cycling, etc. I've put the KR-1 away in it's box, it's sitting there just like the day I bought it.

I'm not much of a believer in conspiracy theories. However, it does seem that us KR-1 purchasers were abandoned. Kyocera should provide a trade-in program to get people out of the KR-1 and into a KR-2....

Instead, I sprung for one of the new Cradlepoint CTR500 units, plugged my KPC680 in (Alltel service) and have NEVER LOOKED BACK. Folks, lemme tell you, the Cradlepoint products are the shiznit! I'm using the CTR500 with a local ethernet switch and here's what I'm seeing so far:

- VERY good reconnect functions
- 2x faster than the KR-1
- no drops - if alltel stays up, so does the CTR500
- WiFi works like a charm
- DHCP actually WORKS
- Web admin interface is very good and provides realtime feedback
- I've got the Cisco v5 VPN client working through it with NO MODS or changes to settings. "It just works"

Ditch the KR1. Go for a Cradlepoint product from 3Gstore. You'll be glad you did. Now EVDO is "usable" for me, where, with the KR1, it wasn't.

I feel the same way. No way I will buy a kr2. After using the kr1 for about 1.5 years and the pos kyocera phones I bought i will probably never buy another kyocera product. The 2 phones I bought the first one completely died within 30 days which they replaced but then within three months both of the phones speakers quite working. Then with the kr1 not being reliable at all I have not faith in them. Even though they are not making the kr1 I will not risk another $200+ ever on them.
