Sprint PPC6800 Mogul Cell Phone Is First to Use Faster EVDO Rev-A Broadband Network

NEW YORK (AP) -- Sprint Nextel Corp. is upgrading one of its cell phone models so that it can connect to a faster data network, doubling its download speeds and boosting upload speeds by about eight times.

Both Sprint and Verizon Wireless operate so-called EV-DO Rev. A networks, but have used them only for laptop cards. Their fastest phones have used the older and slower EV-DO Rev. 0 network.

Sprint said Monday it was releasing a software update for the PPC6800 Mogul phone, made by HTC Corp. of Taiwan, that will enable the phone to connect at Rev. A speeds. Downloads speeds should be 600 kilobits per second to 1,400 kbps, up from a range of 400 kbps to 700 kbps with Rev. 0. It will be capable of uploads of 350 to 500 kbps, up from 50 kbps to 70 kbps.

Sprint said its broadband network now covers 234 million people, and the vast majority of it has been upgraded to EV-DO Rev. A, short for Evolution-Data Optimized Revision A.

The Mogul is a smart phone that runs Windows Mobile software and can be used as a modem for a laptop. It costs $199.99 with a two-year contract and went on sale in June. The software update will be available immediately from HTC's site.

Verizon Wireless has not announced a phone using Rev. A. Spokeswoman Brenda Raney said the main advantage of Rev. A is higher upload speeds, which is important to laptop users but less so for cell-phone users.

AT&T Inc. already sells phones that use its fastest network technology, known as HSDPA, for High-Speed Downlink Packet Access. Its listed download speed is the same as EV-DO Rev. A, with a slightly higher upload speed.

It has been posted, I am downloading the update now.

It is at:

http://www.sprint.com/downloads

Here are the release notes:

Quote:
Release Details:
Dated: 2/22/2008
Software Version: 3.35.651.2
Radio Version: 3.35.04
PRL Version: 60610

Detailed instructions on backing up data on your device and installing the software update are posted on HTC's support website. The software is also posted at this website: www.america.htc.com/mogulupdate

The software update provides several key enhancements for your Mogul:

1. Adds EV-DO Rev. A functionality for faster download and upload speeds when transmitting data wherever EV-DO Rev. A coverage is available.
2. Adds advanced GPS functionality including the software for Sprint Navigation.
3. Adds a Task Manager to the Today screen for easier access and management of Running Programs.
4. Improves Bluetooth performance including usage with Phone As Modem and wireless stereo headsets.
5. Corrects an issue where MSN Messenger content may be erased when the device power cycles.

*** Warning ***

Read the installation directions carefully.

When doing the firmware upgrade, ALL the data on your Mogul will be erased, so make sure that ActiveSync performs a backup BEFORE doing the upgrade. After your Rev A firmware is installed, all your data should be restored.

I'm not saying I get this all the time, but its quite a common reading morning and evenings. Could it be that a PAM connection can now keep up with a card?

Where are all the Mogul owners posting their speeds and otherwise bragging that they can keep up with cards????

the Mogul is the greatest phone ever! It does everything!

This morning it got up early and made me bacon, eggs, and coffee!

Michael has pointed out that the Cradlepoint folks are working on making it compatible with some of their very handy devices.

Celebrate! Life is good!

Hey Mogul owners! I've been trying to voip over my Rev A phone. Oh, I can do it with my computer, thats old hat already.

To test your Rev A phone's super powers, try this site:

http://myspeed.visualware.com/voip/

Its a rather nice speed test that includes voip analysis. Using the CTR350 router in the test, I find I pass as suitable for voip about 70 per cent of the time.

Now, here is where I need some help. I'd like to use skype right on my Mogul, but version 2.2 cuts out the Mic. It is reported that version 2.1 works with Mogul, but its been pulled.

Anyone have the skype 2.1 cab file???

cheers,
