Sprint Mac EVDO

The Novatel V620 and the Novatel S620 (or Merlin S620) are functionally identical cards. The directions do refer to the Novatel V620, BUT the directions are identical for both Verizon & Sprint 620 Card.

BTW, Jim got connected early tonight and reported the following connect speeds on his PowerBook:

Was being too literal. Was looking for something in the instructions that said "sprint" Up and working and things are great. Download speeds are good. Upload could be better. But, purchased this for the road. Have been spending over $10 per day (more in some hotels) for internet. And when in the ballrooms (I put together corporate shows) sometimes as much as a couple grand for a week of T1. Doesn't take long to do the math and realize how cost effective EVDO can be.

out of the sprint evdo cards available, which one do you think is best suited for a mac?

i also may want to use it with the kyocera KR1 router at one point and would like a card that works well with the router. I thought I read somewhere that the Kyocera router and a certain evdo card did not get along (in the form or slow speeds, etc).

any help is grealty appreicated.

Hello,

The best Sprint card is the Merlin S620.

Why?

We offer Sprint Mac Merlin S620 drivers for that card (only that card). The card that has problems with the KR1 (at least with the latest firmware), is the PC5740.

Sprint doesn't support Macs, but we do.

You can get your card from us, which includes Merlin S620 drivers and is unlocked and ready to insert in your Mac and use.

I have a Sprint PCS Connection Card. It is a Qualcomm 3G CDMA PC-5740. Is it compatible with the Mac instructions listed above? If it is supported, I would like to sign up for the support option.

Hello,

We don't support the PC5740 & Mac & Sprint (PC5740 + Mac + Verizon = there is native Mac Software that works great). The only card we support on Sprint EVDO is the Merlin S620, using our Mac OS X Drivers, If you get the Merln S620 & Service from us, you get unlimited support. If you pay for our support (and get your card/service else where), will get your going during the first time install, but you are on your own after that.

The only way to get the PC5740 working, is to follow the directions below. They are a bit technical, BUT they are provided free, and they are not supported in anyway. Many have made their PC5740's work by following these steps - but you are on your own.

Until Sprint supports Mac, your only choice is the Merlin S620.

Thanks for the link. I noticed that the directions referenced Verizon. I assume that means that the PC-5740 does not work at all with Sprint and Mac even with the instructions given. I just want to be sure about this before I decide what to do next.

I have an additional question. If order the Sprint Merlin card through EVDO, will I be able to use the existing phone number/service plan that I already have for the PC 5740. Or would I need to order a new phone number/service in addition to the Merlin card?

The PC5740 is almost exactly the same card between Sprint & Verizon, so the directions are 100% the same for either Verizon or Sprint.

The Sprint Merlin S620 comes with service only. If you are within 15 days of getting your card, take it back. If you are past the 15 days, your only option would be to buy a new card from Sprint and then activate it on your existing account.

Many, many thanks. Using the instructions from the link above, I've gotten the Sprint Card up and working on my Powerbook. A couple of things that were sticking points until I worked around them.

For Sprint the account name is just the phone number without dashes or spaces. So where the directions say

Account Name = xxxxxxxxxx@vzw3g.com (replace xxx's with your Verizon Phone Number)

Just type the numbers and leave @... off entirely

For Sprint the password is your programming code. When I originally got the card it was activated with my work computer and I was given the programming code, a six digit number. So where the directions say

Password = vzw

Just type the six digit code where "vxw" is.

Again thanks so much and I'll have to find a way to be helpful/donate/tell a friend because I was a little worried for a while.

In response to an earlier post about info on the V620 using System Profiler, the user did not click on the correct item in the Contents list. Since I purchased my card through this site, I could download the installer to use with Mac OSX.

Click on the Network item and then Novatel Wireless Merlin CDMA shows in the Active Services list. Click on it and the following info appears (yours may be different):

I did some searching, and on paper, it looks possible to use a USB-to-PCMCIA Reader for Broadband Cards adaptor (link below) with an S620 using the Sprint EVDO on my 12" PowerBook model, which doesn't have a PCI card slot.

Would this change the instructions you provide for activating the S620 via the USB adaptor?

Kenya (or anyone), would you please clarify this, as I'm running in to the same sticking points. Sprint Merlin S620 on a Powerbook 10.4.7...
So in my internet connection panel, I have these fields, with these default values:
Telephone Number: #777
Account Name: OK
Password: ••••••••••

...What should REALLY be in these fields? I've tried changing these values; I think I've tried just about every possible combination that I can think of. 45 minutes with Sprint got me nowhere. I keep getting "Connect script failed" error. Please advise.

I see that there are direction provided for the TERMINAL hack in a mac for a PC-5740. I also see that directions apply to accounts with Verizon. I was just given a Pc-5740 card from Sprint but i cannot find directions for a similar hack with Sprint. I figure everything is the same so i really just need to know what info to input in the Network Preferances pane. (carrier,password,etc. Where can I find the same info for Sprint PC-5740 not a Verizon card?

All the Mac information here and on the evdoinfo.com site specifically refers to powerbooks. Does it also apply to other Apple notebooks? I have a MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo.

the franklin cdu550 and novatel u720 both work with macbook pro.

you're better off with the novatel u720.

none of the pcmcia cards work with mbp, but the verizon v640 expresscard, does.
