I've sent this same thing in an email to 3GStore to get their advice, but I'd like to hear what everyone here would recommend...
Some time ago I foolishly bought a Kyocera KR-1 router and it is a piece of junk. Locks up several times per day. Not even heavy enough to serve as a paper weight or boat anchor. Garbage.
So... I need an EVDO router that *actually* works.
I have Alltel EVDO service with a Kyocera KPC-650 card.
What do you recommend? |

exchange your KPC650 for a UM150, and get a CTR350 |

Must be a conspiracy ... 3GStore recommended almost exactly the same thing.
Deal is, I have about 15 months left on my Alltel contract and I'm pretty happy with my service. So can I buy a UM150 from anyone and pop in my simm? Or do I have to buy the UM150 from Alltel?
This is getting "spendsive". |

Or you heard the same information twice [from the same source].
I'm not saying there is anything wrong with it.... |

Rottweiler,
Check eBay or craigslist for an Alltel UM150. If they do not have one currently listed, check kikaenterprisesinc.com. That is where I got mine. I found them through a Google search. I do NOT work for them but they were the only place that had them available when I wanted mine. Alltel does not care where you buy it, they will activate it for you. |

Thanks everyone.
I ordered a UM150 from here:
http://www.ubid.com/actn/opn/getpage.asp?AuctionId=802208597&uwb=uwbc10397
and a CTR350 and antenna adapter from 3GStore.
Wish me luck.
I may want to try out the IPCOP idea later. I'd really like to have a Linux box at the head of my network. But just don't have the time to mess with it right now. (And the reports of slower speeds scared me off.) |

Rottweiler:
I'm thinking of doing the same setup, but with a handset and usb connection instead of the UM150 because it's $9.99/mo plus $25 unl internet fee instead of 59.99/mo.
How has it worked for you? |

I got the UM150 and CTR350 right on schedule. Activating the UM was a snapwith Alltel. And the combo has performed splendidly. In about a month and a half it has been trouble free. The CTR has not needed reset or reconfigured a single time. (I would have rebooted the KR1 about, oh, 300 times in that same period.)
And this is all with, I'm pretty sure, a yagi antenna that's gotten turned and is now pointing a the wrong forested hill. I see 29 as a signal strength. But I'm getting downloads typically of 100kB/sec.
Overall I'd have to say I'm now a very Cappy Hamper. |
