Ok it's all setup and I only get 2bars in my current (HORRID) position for it.
I need to find that sweet spot around my house and get 5 bars, but even with only 2 bars i supprisingly get 600kbps down and 130bps up. |

Well, that's not too shabby! Just work with it. This is typically something that takes a bit of tweaking to get to optimal performance but that's a pretty good start.
Either an antenna or a router will probably be the way to go. The problem with an antenna is how far you have to run the antenna cable. Doesn't take too much before you lose more than you gain through the signal loss due to the length of the cable. I'm not an expert in that area but there are several folks around here who are (especially at 3GStore) who can lead you in the right direction.
If possible financially, a router is the best way to go. It can be placed in an optimal position and cabling doesn't come into play. With you getting 2 bars down in your basement I'd guess your signal would be pretty sporty upstairs somewhere. By the way, what's your RSSI? |

Ok getting 2bars and stable at 1mbs, EVDO locked. 200ms pings.
I'm going to get an antenna and run the cable to my room. I want a powerful outdoor antenna that is 100 dollars or less. What would you guys suggest? I'm lookin' at needing a good 50-100ft long cable length from the antenna to my room.
I may mount it at a different spot so possibly only 25ft cable length.
I know I don't truly need an antenna if I position it somewhere else, but I don't want to. Rather just get an antenna and have max signal at all times without having to rig it up in an odd spot in my house.
I get 3bars in my moms room. I need to wait for my dad to come home to test in different locations with a laptop. So 3upstairs in moms room. 2 in basement.
RSSI is stable at -80 to -85.. this all only at 2bars
This is going to be BADASS once they start RevA.. I'm only on Rev0 for all I know (I dunno how to check). I can see 4 towers when it's night time out (towers are like invisible during the day.. i see the flashing lights at night) literally just standing on my porch.. so this is wonderful.
I seriously couldn't be anymore happier.. this really made my day... week.. month.. YEAR even!
Once I get the antenna and home network setup.. I will quickly tell HughesNet to SHOVE IT!
If you see a tower or are close to a tower.. GET EVDO FOR SURE! |

You'll know you're on Rev A when your upload speeds exceed 144kbps.
Glad it's all going so well so far. Talk to 3GStore about the antenna. They're the experts in that area. 50' may be pushing it but they'll know. |

Also what do you guys suggest as a firewall? I'm so used to going through HughesNet and their built in firewalls to bother with installing one.
I used to have one I liked, but crappy Norton bought them out. I was considering zone alarm. I'd like a good free one that's non-intrusive if possible.
Ok I tweaked my TCP receive window to 65536 and set my max speed to 19200 and this increased my download speed by 200kbps.
So I get a steady 800kbs-1.5mbs on only 2 bars locked EVDO. |
