Just got my ctr350 from 3gstore and with some great and patient help from a 3gstore tech got it up and running with security set up. It works great. It lets me have both computers online at the same time.I'm using a Verizon 720 usb air card, I have a 3year old Dell desk top running XP on the ethernet to the ctr350 and a Dell printer hooked to the desk top, also a new HP laptop with Vista on wifi. Can I some how access the desk top and printer thru the ctr350 from the laptop? This not a must my house is not that big, just wondered. Thanks again 3gstore.

That is why it is so great to purchase your wireless stuff from 3gstore. Try calling one of the other vendors and see how much help you get! |

Hello,
You are going to have to set up some sharing on the desktop machine.
Please note that you entering an area that will directly affect the security of your network, and depending on how important this is to you, you might be well advised to study up on the issues.
This may be very easy, or may be very difficult. It all depends on a lot of factors.
To get access to the printer, you will need to share the printer from the desktop machine (use the windows control panel's printers applet on the XP box, right click, then select share, where you may be prompted with some dialogs asking how you may want handle security issues - then again, perhaps not). Also, you may need to adjust any firewall and antivirus software you may have to get the job done.
Then you will need to use the Vista's control panel printer's applet (add printer) and search the network/workgroup) for the newly shared printer. If you shared the printer, and you cannot see it when searching on the Vista machine, you probably have a firewall setting you need to change.
Depending on the version of Vista, and the print drivers you installed on the desktop, this may, or may not work (at least perhaps without kicking it a few times).
For example, I have a HP printer on the network I cannot get to work under Vista 64, since Vista 64 does not yet have the drivers to support it, and neither does the XP box that is sharing it.
Other printers will also react differently to sharing as well. For example (general case only), some Lexmark inkjet printers may have some problems, as when you add the printer, you may get a Microsoft driver that gets installed on the laptop, you might get a Lexmark driver, perhaps the driver is already installed on the laptop and will get used (or perhaps overwritten), or perhaps, the driver installer was not written at all for a network install, and you might have to install the driver locally on the laptop first.
In any case, if the driver was written to work only locally, you may have some issues. For example, perhaps the Lexmark driver (on the laptop) may think it is physically connected to the printer, and try to talk bi-driectionally to the printer to check its ink cartridge. Since its not directly connected (its only a share), it may lock up. Note that I am only giving this as a general case example. Your mileage may very (a lot), and I state that as I have been writing Windows print drivers since Windows version 0.8 beta (I helped to develop the first 3rd party print driver for Windows, and have provided code for a lot of the drivers out there ever since), so, I have seen most of the problems you are likly to experience.
Good luck with the printer sharing. I hope it is as easy as clicking the ok button a few times.
You asked about accessing the desktop from the laptop, and I am unsure if you simply want access to the files (file sharing), or if you want to be able to log on to the desktop and control it from the laptop.
Also, you did not mention if you want to be able to get to the desktop from anywhere, or just inside your LAN (ie: do you need to tell the router to allow some types of incoming connections through).
File sharing can be done by right clicking on a directory, select sharing, and set it up on the desktop. On the laptop, you may want to access the share by surfing in "my network" from explorer, or even use the menu option in explorer to "map a shared drive", where you turn the share into a drive letter on the laptop.
There are other methods as well. For example, you could setup an FTP server on the desktop, and access it from the laptop, and even map a ftp connection as a drive as well.
If you are wanting to log on to the desktop from the laptop, you can setup a windows remote desktop connection (easy), or explore many other (perhaps much more secure) options.
Again, a lot depends on what level of security you want to use. In any case, you are opening a hole, and you may want to think about how others might try to get it. I have logged over 300,000 attacks an hour trying to get in to my system at times. I'm not trying to scare you, but simply let you know one of the reasons why your cable modem lights may be flashing a lot when nothing is plugged in on the LAN side of things.
Whew! I dont have time to write about all the options you have, and its probably more efficient for you to decided, then ask more questions as needed
I hope this has been helpful,
Joe |

You are very welcome.
I am sorry if I provided too much insight on the subject (I tend to cover subjects too well).
I feel like I may have scared you off from trying this.
You would probably have no problem sharing that printer, and the file sharing is pretty easy stuff as well. Most likely, you are a just a few clicks away.
Since you are setup behind the CTR-350, you are probably ok security wise for sharing inside your network.
In any case, you can give sharing a try, and if things do not work out, you always turn it back off
I guess I should have added that to my original reply.
Good luck!
