I am going to set up a fixed EVDO platform. Based on all I have read, I have come down to what I think are two equipment arrangement options. If there is a 3rd or 4th, tell me.

Option 1
yagi antenna > amplifier > UM150 > Cradlepoint Router (ethernet firmware, wireless not used, router/gateway/modem interface only)> Existing LAN

Option 2
yagi antenna > amplifier > PC5750 > Linksys WRT54G3G-ST (wireless not used, router/gateway/modem interface only) > Existing LAN

Opinions? Better Equipment Options? Gotcha's? Missed BFO's?

Do you know for sure you'll need the antenna and amp? If not try it out first without since there are times they offer no real help at all.

As for the device/router combo I'd definitely go with the UM150/Cradlepoint combo. Gives more options for the future where it may be possible that you'd need mobility, probably would be better resale wise, (if ever needed) and the main reason to me would be using the Cradlepoint routers which simply seem to outperform the other.

Thanks for the feelback.

Can you point to some data, tests, posts, ??? that show this difference? I haven't seen any. I'm not concerned about things like wireless range. I am interested in two major items, throughput and TCP Port control (forwarding and triggering). Secondary to that is stability, reliabilty, etc. Whether it is the router, modem, or the router/modem combination.

Thanks again.

the problem with testing is the inconsistency of the testing sites themselves.

i realize that its difficult to take "on faith" what so many people are saying about cradlepoint routers... but the number of people who have noticed a difference in 'snappiness' or 'usefulness' especially as it applies to the more difficult kinds of connections like voip/vpn/streaming, should be considered evidence enough.

and remember, there are return policies in play. little risk involved to see for yourself.

wipipe does make a difference. is it measurable? maybe, but we don't swear by the sites we use for measurement. we use those sites as general guidelines.

I'm going with Option 1 myself. Just waiting on FexEx to get it to me. Smile

Excellent point on that blog entry, Alex. Even though speed tests indicate that I'm between 3-400, it sure feels a lot lot faster when I browse the net.

Thanks Alex. I understand your points. And, yes, regarding test sites, any of them are a SWAG at best, based a 1.63 million variables. I was thinking more about device benchtests. Have seem some cursory ones around this site and others.

However, I did finally find some of the data I was looking for regarding TCP control capabilites.

So the mad scientist in the forest will let the wheels keep turning!!! Mr. Green
