Has anyone yet conducted a range test with the stock 1000(no booster or external antenna)? I saw one post where a member got 100% signal throughout his 4000 sq ft home. Anyone do a distance line of sight test or otherwise yet?

Relax Alex lol , yep I read it, but took more of that to be on the receive side (from the tower type receive). I was referring to the transmit range my router would have as far as transmit for others to use here in the campground. After re-reading that part of the review yes I think it cleared the air. I think and correct me if I'm wrong, but yes it should great improve the signal strength out and of course that is determined by many variables already discussed. Just maybe I'll be able to give the pumped up WTR54G a long need sleep and break lol. By the way the review is what changed my mind and why I went with the 1000 as I told you on the phone. tomorrow ... firedude will be styling. Now I'll go back and read it a 3rd time before bed so I'll be sure to be thoroughly cornfused. Just kidding lol!

I am getting 1/4 mile through the metal side of my PT Cruiser, over a hill, and out of line of sight. I get greater than 1/2 mile out the back window.
I get "four bars" though the front of the car, and though a metal garage door.
Currently, i am getting "4 bars" at a 45 degree angle from the car approx 100 feet away, though a brick wall, into the Starbucks, though a wooden lounger, a fat dude, a skinny chick, a big honkin purse, the screen, the keyboard, the motherboard, and the battery... [sip]
I'm impressed!

Sounds great Joe! Impressive. It'll be nice not to haver to use the old hotrod Linksys as a repeater type anymore and have decent transmit range with the primary router. I can say I definitely had to "help" the KR1 with the WRT54G or my range would have been in the gutter. The KR1 even with the after market antenna just didn't seem to get out that far at all to me. Transmit range wise.

I notice you mention a WTR54G in this post, and WRT54G in another. Do you have the WTR54G (Linksys Travel Router)? That thing really sucks some power (and puts out a lot of heat). I have never tried a range test, however, I know I have never been impressed by it.
The WRT54G on the ohter hand, can put out an ok signal if you get the optional high gain antennas.
Also, I will mention that the range figures I gave for the MBR-1000 where "N" mode figures. I am pretty sure that "G" and "B" modes would be much less.
Wait a sec and I will check.... Well, my Palm TX is getting 4 bars, and I think it is a "B" device, so i passed the StarBucks test.

Joe,
The WRT54G I have has 3rd party firmware on it and I have the transmit power set up pretty high on it. I've ran it non stop the last 3 years. It's just your regular old router/access point, but since I was able to go in and "pump it up" it has phenomnal range! Morro bay state park is huge and I can cover the entire campground with it where as the parks AT&T wi-fi doesn't. The funny party is that their expensive Cisco system and outdoor roof mounted omni directional antenna does NOT cover what my little 'ol WRT54G does. Up until tomorrow (I hope) I've ran everything including my Direcway satellite and KR1 through the thing to get the transmit distance I needed. Now I don't need to cover the whole park, that was a nicety and as I stated and the reason I asked is now iI'll hopefully be able to put the Linksys to bed. As far as power the WRT54G uses hardly anything and has never ever even gotten warm. It's not a broadband router. It's a regular access point/router that I use. Turned the wi-fi mode of in the KR1 for example and just ran a cable over from the LAN port on the KR1 to the ethernet port on the Linksys. that gave me a whole lot more distnance. Tomorrow will tell all tales and everything I'm reading I'll have one less router/access point cluttering my desk.

I always loved my WRT54G's. Its the WTR54G's I do not really care for (man they run hot).
Morro Bay!!! Sweet! I used to commute up and down the 1, and would stop by every now and then! Hopefully, Lynda and I will make it out that direction in the spring.

Joe if you make it down this way be sure and stop by at least for a bowl of clam chowder! I'll be at the Strand until May 1st (the other end of town) the onto to the park for the summer.
Yep this morning I hope to give the 'ol Linksys a rest. I'll report back later in the day with a field test report on my range. I'll take my trusty Dell Axim X51v and Wi-Fi companion and see what I come up with.

| Is the range dependent on having a Wireless N card in your laptop/PC? Or do you get the extended range regardless of your card? |

The router seems to have exceptional range for all devices (at least when compared to my Linksys and Netgear routers), however, yes, to get the really big range boost, you need a "N" device.
