I have a Vodafone Huawei E172 usb stick modem

pocket-lint.co.uk/reviews/review_summary.phtml/2858/3882/vodafone-72mb-usb-hsdpa-modem.phtml

Now I am coming over to the US to visit and wouldn't mind picking one of these cradlepoints up.

Does anyone know whether they will work with the above modem? If not would the cradlepoint work with N95?

Well they don't have it on their supported lists, so I'm going to assume it won't work.

Anyone out there test this?

While neither of those are on the (limited) list of supported HSPA devices, it doesn't mean that they will not work. There is a "Modem Settings" web page that allows you to enter dial strings that work with your device if it is not supported by default. So it is possible you would be able to make one or the other modem/phone work.

I don't see a "C-mark" on my unit, which I believe means the unit isn't certified in the EU. I don't know if that matters or not.

Well it boils down to whether I feel its justified to spend $180 on a device that may not work.

As you are aware in Europe HSDPA / GSM is the defacto standard. The dial strings for the UK vodafone network are

APN - vodafone
username : web
password: web

This is public knowledge - freely available info on the web. So could I add those details in the settings page somewhere?

Sure. HSDPA and GSM/GPRS/EDGE are also popular in the US with AT&T and T-Mobile.

The user interface allows you to customize dial strings and username, password. So there's a fair chance that the CTR will work for you. But it's your call whether you are willing to risk the money.

I would suggest you email Cradlepoint and see if they would be willing to work with you on this. While I doubt they would guarantee your modems would work, I'm guessing they would be interested in expanding their supported HSPA/GGE list and might help you find the right dial strings to support them. I could have sworn someone else on the list asked if the Huawei was supported, and that N95 is an amazing device.

I have emailed cradlepoint their response was

"We do not as yet support these modems because we do not currently
support usage of our device outside the USA. We hope to expand to areas
in foreign countries in the future but at this time we only service the
USA. Keep watching our site for updates on our progress!"

But I guess I can try work with them on the issue.

Is the software that ships from 3g store a non standard proprietary software? that they have developed for the cradlepoint?

I think you may be thinking of the 1.7.3 firmware, that was exclusive to 3Gstore customers. This isn't "non-standard" firmware, it was developed by cradlepoint, but only released to 3Gstore customers.

Just one more reason why you want to buy your EVDO products from 3Gstore Wink

I would like to buy the unit but it's the risk of it not working. Also I read the following less than glowing review?

.broadbandreports.com/forum/r19831949-Cradlepoint-PHS300-review

If I bout from anywhere it would be here just for the support alone!

anyone who sells one to you for attempted use in UK, is likely to do so on a "no-returns" policy since it would be difficult for anyone in the US to help you troubleshoot problems you may have (mainly because we won't have any practical experience with your provider).

as you've seen, not even cradlepoint can offer support for something they have no way of testing themselves.

that said, we do know of customers who have bought units and taken to canada, and had success.... right out of the box.

if your UK credit card's billing address verifies, and we ship to that same address, we may sell you one... we'll test it so we know it works before it leaves us, but once it leaves us, its yours. no returns.

my biggest concern is that the device you want to use, is not in use by any US carrier, and i'd have more faith it was going to work if it were at least the same device as we use here. the canadian success was with a Novatel U720, similar to what sprint USA sold a few months back.

my gut says, this is a waste of time.

BTW, the 2.0x firmware includes the 1.7.3 features. Think of 1.7.3 as a beta to the 2.0.

Keep in mind that the "review" you quote, isn't really a "review", but more of the things that the person didn't like about the router, and may or may not be a factor for you. Sure, it doesn't have a car power adapter (but one is available), sure, yes it doesn't have SSH connectivity (but that may not be important to you).

We wrote a full review at:

PHS300 Review - EVDOinfo.com

BTW, if you are visiting the Chicago area, you are more than happy to bring your card to our warehouse and we can give it a try Keep in mind, it may not work over here, BUT if we go to the modem page and it is recognized, it has a good chance working.

Another avenue to take, contact Huawei and have them contact the engineers at CradlePoint.

Well I tried it. And tried quite hard. Using the latest PHS300 V2.0.1 firmware dated 22nd Feb, and trying the usual manual modem scripts.

But all with no joy. The PHS simply doesn't recognise the E272 device at all. No dialog with the modem. Must be something in the USB recognition.

Cradlepoint support helpful in responding but unable to assist.

Which is a shame....so suggest you spend your $ on something that works. I've now got a nice black paper weight on my desk.

Commadus,

Do us a favor...

After your modem is inserted into your windows machine, open up your device manager and find the modem listed. Click on Properties and then the details tab. In the first drop down under "Device Instances ID" we are looking for your: VID -PID info.

VID=Vendor ID
PID= Product ID

If you could get the following information and post it here in the below format, we can see about getting that added into the next firmware release to see if it would work for you as well;-)

VID_xxxx
PID_xxxx

I can use D02HW(Huawei E220 OEM) with PHS300(firm 2.0.1) in Japan.

My successful step is ...
1st : I connect D02HW and PHS300, PHS300 don't recognize D02HW.
2nd : I plug out slighty USB cable from D02HW slightly and plug in again.
3rd : PHS300's center LED turns umber -> OK,just waiting for dialup to carrier.
(Need proper connection&modem setting)
If it don't turn on, plug out & in again.
