| I don't know anyone who has used an 8GB microSD card in their 727. Largest I have used is a 4GB...let us know if it works! |

| Sprints specs on the 727 say "This device has a microSD slot that supports up to a 4G memory card" so not sure if it will take an 8 or not. States the same thing on Novatel's site, 4 gig max. |

| Yeah, I was hoping they state 4GB because either 1) Sprint doesn't carry 8GB microSD cards or because 2) 8GB cards didn't exist when the spec was written. |

The reason I posted that was not long ago several PDA's were NOT taking over the identified size of SD and MicroSD they advertised. They weren't compatible for whatever reason. I'd try one if I had something else it would work in if it doesn't work in the modem is all. The U727 is a relatively new device as well. Not like it was made a couple years ago. Would be interesting to see, but I'll let soembody else try it lol! |

I think it depends on the "Speed performance rating", example, "Class 4" that the SDHC is rated. There were other threads up here where people had problems with different SDHCs, so make sure there is a return policy before ordering.
I will try to find out what the specs are from Novatel directly. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

Cool, thanks Michael!..... Quick question as I scratch my head here... can the Sprint software be loaded to the SD card versus your hard drive? I've had some very weird happenings since I loaded the Sprint software. No problems running in the NDIS mode at all though.
In the non NDIS mode I get an error where the software must shut down and sometimes get a quick flash of the blue screen of death (XP Home) and the system reboots. After reboot it says system recovered from a serious error. Of course I look at the error and it look like ancient Greek lol. thought I'd try loading it to the SD card maybe. If I un install though the 727 will keep it's NDIS cionfiguration right? As long as I disconnect it before uninstalling the connection manager. This may all be a mute point too as I suspect once I get my CTR350 Friday it may not be an issue!

Michael - Did you get any info from Novatel yet? I'm anxious to fill that tiny little slot and I'm debating whether to bother trying an 8GB card or not.
Are all 4GB microSD cards now microSDHC? Or, are the non microSDHC ones the old school "TransFlash" labeled ones?
Thanks! |

I wouldn't install the software on the card. Windows is kind of random with the drive letter it assigns portable devices every time you plug it in. In all honesty, you don't NEED the software to use the card... just create a DUN connection to #777.
I do plan on loading the U727 drivers onto the card, so that I can insert the card into any computer and create the DUN connection to connect without installing the software. I might even be able to script the connection creation. |

You can "load" the software on there, but I would not encourage installing the software on there.
As one user pointed out, the drive letter can change and that might muck things up, but more than that, a lot of the "software" is actually drivers that get installed into Windows, so much of any benefit of "installing" to the card (hard disk space) would be would be minimal.
FWIW, the blue screen you see is probably related to the driver portions that do get installed into Windows.
Things you can do:
As I understand it, the Sprint software comes in two flavors, one embedded into the 727 (the mini version I think they call it), then the "full" version you get when you do an update.
I put a copy of the full version on the SD card, so I can blow the full update version to any machine if needed. Then again, the "mini" version that is supposed to be embedded on the 727 has never really worked for me.
I also put all the Sprint/727 reference material I have found on the card, so that it is handy, along with CradlePoint firmware and saved config files, so that I easily could do a repair on the fly, from any machine.
Finally, I made the SD card bootable, and I put a copy of Norton ghost on the drive (a requirement for all our SD cards). While my computer does not see the 727 as a valid USB reader at boot time, I can boot the SD card by other means, and preform an emergency disk restore on the fly if needed.
There are probably some other cool things you could do with the card (such as install a mini copy of Windows or Linux to play with. I know Ubuntu easily fits on the card with plenty of room to spare).
Also, you mentioned in another post about wanting to try an 8 gig card. There are a few good vendors that sell SD cards on a "try it out" basis. Thats how I finally found a 4 gig card that would work with our PalmTX units.
Tony, if you want, you can write me direct for more info. My address should be in the package I sent ya, and ol Joe C. Hecht (note the spaces) is way to easy to find on the net (searching yahoo provides the best search in this case).

I can confirm that this model does work, but with a catch-22. http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-MicroSDHC-Memory-MobileMate-Package/dp/B000WPDKRI/ref=pd_bbs_sr_5?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1206533953&sr=8-5
DO NOT, AND I REPEAT, DO NOT TRY TO USE THE MINI READER THAT'S IN THE PICTURE/PACKAGE! The reader I'm talking about is in the pic that's on amazon. I tried looking for the original pic at compusa (where I bought it at) or sandisk's site, but it isn't on there. I inserted the micro card into that specific reader and the fit was so tight that it wouldn't release it. I tried as hard as I could to pull it out with my fingernail, but it wouldn't budge. I could have used something harder, but I didn't want to dent, smash, or scratch the micro card. I ended up cutting up and destroying the reader in order to get the card out. I suggest a different type of reader like this setup(fortunately, I had this from when I bought a 4gb card previously) (I can't seem to find a 8gb micro sdhc with the sd card and usb adapter, like the pic. They might need to be purchased separately if available). http://www.amazon.com/PowerLab-SDSDQ-4096-A11M-Sandisk-Micro-Sdhc/dp/B000UZVKO0/ref=pd_bbs_sr_7?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1206534776&sr=8-7
That reader works fine in my macbook and I tried the old 4gb micro card inside the sd card adapter in a high def, flash based camcorder and it worked great. The old 4gb is a class 2 and the new 8gb is a class 4. I didn't try the bigger card in the camcorder yet. As for performance, both the 4gb and the 8gb are dog ass slow (writing was the only test I did with the 8gb). I tried copying a 870mb movie file to the card inside the u727 and the speed was about 2mb per 3 seconds. I did the same thing with the 4gb card and got the same results in speed. I found this somewhat unacceptable for normal use but I guess it will just have to do for backup usage for now. It almost acts like usb 1.1 speeds in my opinion in the u727. Trying it out in the sd card adapter, inserted into the white usb adapter (pictured in the above second link), it was nice and fast! I don't remember the boost in speed time measurement but it was a night and day difference.
So, in closing, the Sandisk 8gb class 4 micro sdhc does work in the u727, but don't use the little black and red reader that might come with it. My suggestion for a reader is the sd card + usb adapter setup. It might be kinda bulky but it works great and can be used in things that can use sdhc sd cards too! |

I just bought the same thing at Best Buy. Here's what I've found...
When inserting the brand new card into the U727, Windows Vista prompted me to format it, and Format said the maximum size was just under 4GB formatted. So, I guess it doesn't read 8GB cards.
Then I used the bundled reader, and used that to format the card to almost 8GB, then put it back in the U727.
At this point, Windows reads the card fine, and thinks there's almost 8GB free, but when trying to copy 7 GB of content over, everything past about 3.5 GB fails...
The bottom line is that the 8GB card works, but only as a 4GB. |
