New EVDO sighting?
I am a Sprint customer here in N.W. Florida (no Sprint EVDO in my area).
To get EVDO, I have had to set my modem to "roam only" in order to get the Alltel EVDO to kick in.
When roaming on Alltel, I would get a EVDO 1.x in, and RTT1.x upload.
I do not know if this had anything to do with anything, however, last week, for the most part, download speeds dropped to a few hundred kb, and the problem with uploads creeping along at a few kb's per seecond went away.
Service was Up and Down all week.
Yesterday, I want out of town to an area that had Sprint EVDO, so I switched my modem in the sprint connection manager from "roam only" to Sprint (no Roam), and clicked EVDO only.
Now I am back at home. I forgot to change it back to roam on Alltel. Strangely, I am now connecting at EVDO 1.x, both up and down, on the Sprint network.
My questions are:
Has Sprint really added EDO in my area, or did they fix something to auto roam onto to Alltel?
Is what I am seeing an indicator that they may be adding EVDO RevA soon? (in other words, have others seen this sort of thing happen right before they flipped the RevA switch?
Is it possible to call Sprint and ask them? Who would I call?
Thanking you in advance for your ideas and thoughts!

An update...
Now, I get from time to time, for just a few minutes, I get kicked off my connection, RevA becomes available, and I am unable to connect with the message "Data services are not available in your area". When the RevA goes away, I can connect at EVDO 1x.
The nearest EVDO is about 130 miles form here.
With all this strangness, I am beginning to think they are getting ready to turn it on!

It certainly sounds like you're getting Sprint native EVDO in your area Joe. I remember last year when Sprint was rolling out Rev A all over pretty much everyone experienced the intermittent connections like you're seeing. For some this lasted several weeks while for others it was only a matter of days.
I suppose the best way to be sure is to go into your SCM and set "Mode" to "auto" and "Roaming" to "Sprint" and then if you're still connecting to EVDO it's obviously Sprint's network.
Good luck! |
