Just noticed that version 2.0.1 of the Cradlepoint CTR-350 firmware is available for download from the Cradlepoint web site.

I've downloaded it, but haven't had a chance to update my CTR-350; I'll report back once I've done the upgrade (probably late tonight). I have no idea what they've fixed or updated.

You might want to wait until the experts at 3gstore have installed 2.0.1 and can tell us what has been changed and/or fixed before you try yourself.

Or not.

So I just had a few minutes to play with the 2.0.1 firmware that Cradlepoint just released. It works, and it fixes a problem I had with the 2.0.0 release.

Note that the Cradlepoint web site is currently telling the automatic update mechanism built into the ctr350 that 2.0.0 is the most current firmware. If you want to get 2.0.1 you'll have to go to their web site and manually download it.

Also, as I mentioned in the previous message, if you're not adventurous, you might want to wait until the experts at the 3gstore have a chance to check out 2.0.1 before you install it.

As a point of reference, I got my ctr350 from the 3gstore with 1.7.3 installed, and I have a Franklin cdu680 plugged into its USB port.

When I installed the 2.0.0 update a few weeks ago, I noticed that none of my saved (1.7.3) configurations would load. I got an error from the ctr350 complaining that the configuration file was corrupt. So I configured the ctr350 by hand, and all was well with the router, but when I saved the 2.0.0 configuration file, I still couldn't load it back in, getting the same corrupt file error. None the less, I stored two 2.0.0 configuration files, one with the settings I use when the ctr350 port is set to LAN mode, and one when it's set to WAN mode. I couldn't load them, but I saved them anyway. So 2.0.0 couldn't restore saved configuration files, at least for me.

When I installed 2.0.1, the ctr350 came up with all my settings intact, and I discovered that it would restore ALL of my saved configurations, even the 1.7.3 files. So 2.0.1 can restore saved configuration files.

I haven't noticed any other differences, but I didn't have any problems with 2.0.0 other that the one I just mentioned.

I'm definitely going to wait for the 3g experts to have a look.

This is the advantage of this 3g forum, and I want to take this opportunity to point out how helpful it is to be able to have such a place.

I was over at a sprint forum at broadband reports.com...or was it dslreports.com... anyway, there were a few people complaining about 3g because as a company that sells and promotes products some complaints were made about slanted information, and even censored information in this forum.

Well here's the thing: its good to hang out at multiple discussion groups and get varied input, but I am...or was... a businessman, and as such I recognize that a forum such as this serves a very important function.

While the 3g folks can't claim to be entirely unbiased ombudsman, blind freddy can see after 10 minutes on the forum that they give good advice, go to bat for the people that post here with issues, and give the people here strong and valid reasons to swing business their way.

I do my own research and see what is out there solution-wise, but I always come back here because they are true tech weenies (meant in the best way), and they like to sell the best solutions. They like this stuff, and they use it themselves.

Business isn't a dirty word, its what makes the world go round. The most important thing is to find businesses with good ethics who take pride in the solutions they provide, and that is what happens here.

I come here often, and as for me, I cut my teeth on Appletalk more than 20 years ago. It was a magical thing to connect a few machines together with wires and get them to send messages...just like that string and tin cans that never really did work. 10/100 and gigabit wired technologies are great, but a little dull now. This wireless stuff is a bit bleeding edge, but its put the fun back in.

Without folks like the 3g people, all there would be are forums filled with pimply teenagers steering you in the wrong direction, and tech mongers talking at so many different levels of the OSI model that it might as well be Chinese.

I am new to the EVDO/Router world. Would you please explain why you would have a seperate config file for WAN and 1 for LAN on the CTR350 port

To save me time and possible mistakes when I change the router from one mode to the other. One can just make the changes by hand each time, but using a configuration file is faster and (generally) less prone to errors.

Now if your question is really what the two different modes do, then the answer takes a little longer. Smile

Your ctr350 in LAN mode gets its internet connectivity via the modem you have plugged into the USB port. It gives you that connectivity via its WiFi and/or its ethernet port. In fact, if you have your computer or local wired LAN hooked up to the ctr350's ethernet port, you can turn off its WiFi and the ctr350 will act as a cellular to ethernet adapter.

In WAN mode, your ctr350 gets its internet connectivity via either the modem plugged into the USB port or a wired internet connection plugged into the ethernet connector. In either case, that internet connection is only available via the ctr350's WiFi. This allows you to use your ctr350 as a standard wireless router with automatic fallback to the cellular connection when your wired internet connection fails. You can't turn off the ctr350's WiFi in the WAN mode because there would be no way to talk to the router anymore (and it would be useless).

Hope this answers your question.

I don't know about that, however, I am very sure that some of my posts here have appeared like they came from a loose cannon in need of extinguishing and I have never been censored.

I tell it like it is. Hard, harsh reality as I see it, and I do not accept any sidestepping on the issue at hand. So far, the 3G folks have done nothing but lend a ear to my vents, and go to bat.

Same thing with the folks at CradlePoint. I am pretty sure they cringe when they see an incomming email (a.ka. bombshell) from me, yet they remain polite, helpfull, and (perhaps) even thankfull.

I just read a bunch of the postings at the other sites mentioned. I've purchased a bunch of stuff over the years. I've also played the "help" game with a bunch of vendors when a product didn't perform as advertised. The bottom line - if you don't have support - you have nothing! Most of the other Forums provide 15% help and 85% trash. One product works fantastic for one person and doesn't work out for another - that's life in the computer field. Why in the world would 3G push a product that was substandard and then have to deal with nothing but complaints and support calls? Sure 3G (and any other company) "promote" products that they have confidence in and then have to support. The "CradlePoint" change log is a prime example. 3G acknowledged the problem and are actively trying to get it corrected. How many other computer outlets would go to bat for their customers? Not many - you buy the product and then you go away...Anyway, I've said enough.

Thanks.. yes the above explains it better. I am looking to use a Franklin CDU680 and then hook my computers wired to the router LAN port. I hope that the CTR350 has good instructions on how to set this all up.
