I picked up a Omni Through the roof antenna and a Wilson 3 watt amp from the great folks at the 3G store for our Notatel Ovation U727, and with anticipation of installing the new CradlePoint MBR-1000 "N" router into our PT Cruiser, we decided to go ahead and mount the antenna (A.K.A. "Sputnik on a stick") last night.
Well, today, I took some readings from inside the car using the Sprint Connection Manager:
-92db without amp and antenna
-52db with amp and antenna
All I can say is "WOW IS IT UGLY" AND "WOW IT WORKS GREAT"!

What model amp and antenna did you use?
What do you see as far as data speeds changes? |

EVDO Direct Connect Amplifier (3 Watt):

Shorty RV Through Roof Mount Antenna For Novatel U720 (with U727 connector):

It is hard to say what the speed improvement was (if any), since there are so many external factors. For example, I can test the same server twice within a couple of minutes, and receive two totally different results.
However, I want to perceive that my upload/download speeds have increased. I can say that upload speeds seems to have increased from a (1x) average of about 80kbs, to about 130kbs, and my download speeds probably did not change much, but are now more repeatable at around 1500kbs.
Also, the db readings I gave was for EVDO. The 1x readings improved even more drastically, going from soemthing like -103db down to approx the same as the EVDO reading (-53db ?). That probably helped my upload speeds, as I am having to use Alltel roaming to get EVDO, and the upload speed is capped at 1x.
The main purpose for the Amp/Antenna/Wireless "N" is to get reception in "fringe" areas. I am really going to have to write a "Success story" here in the forums, as this all has provided one of the biggest "life changes" I have ever had. I am a computer programmer, and have worked out of my home for 23 years. I sometimes work as many as 120 hours a weeek. Online access is an must, so in the past, I have been "jailed" to my online connection. Just to get a good work enviroment with a view, in the past, we have tried moving to exotic places with a view (too expensive and often inpracticle), and even tethering cable to our sailboat. Now, I can just pick up my laptop and go to places such as state parks, beach pavillions and the like, and work for the day.

does the improvement in work environment mean lower rates and faster service for your current (and possibly future) customer base? |

My rates are going up, not down (I gotta pay for all this stuff).
However, since I have a better work environment, I feel better, think better, and do not burn out as quickly. This translates into more hours, better code, and more throughput, and that is good for my customers.

Does anyone know if there is a difference in Signal Amps?
I mean, if you have a Digital Antenna or Wilson (etc.) does one amp boost the signal better or all they about the same? |
