There seem to be a few different passwords required when using the CTR350. I think I've got most of it figured out, but I not sure about one of them, and thought I'd see if anyone can help me figure it out completely.

I know on the Basic -> Wireless page where it says "Pre-Shared Key" that this is the password used to access the wireless network.

I know on the Tools -> Admin page were is says "Admin Password" that this is the password I use to access the router config page when I type the router IP address in my web browser.

What I'm not sure about is on the Tools -> Admin page were it says "Internet Access Password". Where is this used? Is this the password that is used on the Basic -> Wireless page where it says "Require user login"? If I have the password set and the "Require user login" checked, should my web browser go to a login page (kind of similar to what one might see at a hotel when trying to access the internet)? I tried this, and my web browser just timed out without going to a login page. I'm not sure what I might have done wrong.

Lastly is requiring user login even a beneficial security measure if I'm already using a WPA with a network key?

Thanks for the help.

Oh, and I'm using firmware 2.0.

If I recall correctly the user login info for internet access is just added security and can be disabled. I believe I saw this screen in 3G's review or another post. If you disable that you'll then all you have is the regular login for admin purposes, then if you choose to secure the router you'll do so like me with the WEP or whichever method you choose. In the admin section somewhere there is a box where you can either enable or disable the internet access login requirement.

Yeah, this was kind of the basis for my question...

On the Tools -> Admin page you can set an "Internet Access Password". On the Basic -> Wireless there is a box that says "Require user login" I'm wondering if these two settings correspond to one another? If I check the require user login is this the password that I need to set?

I'm asking instead of testing it for myself, because I can't seem to get a user login screen to appear. If I check the require use login box, then my browser just times out before a login screen ever appears.

I mentioned in my first post, I'm already using WPA encryption. That's why I was also wondering if requiring a user login is even beneficial? What added security does requiring a user login give that WPA doesn't already give?

I'm confused about all of this too. Everytime I try to set it up so that neighbors cant connect wirelessly to my ctr-350 it locks me out also. It will say something like, my computers security setting do not match my modem security settings. I'm scared to death that somebody will run me over my 5gb limit with verizon!!!! Can't seem to figure out all the password stuff. I just want it to require a password to connect through wifi like it does at a secured public wifi location...thanks if anybody can help us with this!!!

I'll give this a try...

Yes, I believe that the "Internet Access Password" corresponds with the "Require User Login" check box. By default, this is the same as the Admin Password (last six characters of the MAC address).

If you are using Wireless Protected Access (WPA) then I would think that requiring user login for Internet access is unnecessary and would just be an inconvenience.

Regarding not being able to get to the login screen, do you have Javascript enabled? What browser are you using? I have found that Pocket Internet Explorer (Windows Mobile) and Palm Blazer can not log in to the router's configuration management pages. Firefox and IE work great providing Javascript is turned on.

cavinkeven:

Are you trying to use Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) or WPA? My Linux system doesn't support WPA without a lot of fooling around, so I tried WEP and just couldn't get it to work. Got tired of resetting the router everytime I got locked out of it! For now I am just using MAC address filtering. That is "weak security" but since I don't have any neighbors closer than a quarter mile, I think it will work for me, especially since I am turning off the router when not in use. Anyway, if WEP doesn't work for you perhaps WPA might do the job, or if you're having trouble with WPA, give WEP a try, even though it is considered to be flawed. (Don't ask -- I couldn't explain it even if I understood it!)

Never ever rely on WEP for security. It is just too easy to crack. And even MAC filtering is pretty much useless this day and time. MAC addresses are too easy to spoof. WPA2 is your best option....or if you can't do that, WPA.

Sounds like I was on the right track with the password stuff. I'm using Firefox and Javascript is turned on through the Firefox options window. I don't know why it's timing out... Maybe I'll have to give it another go now that I know what I'm looking for. In the end though, I don't think I'll even bother using it since my WPA seems to be working just fine.

Supposedly all my network cards will do WPA2, but for some reason I haven't been able to get it to work, and I'm tired of having to reset the router when I lock myself out. I'm currently using WPA with AES since the CTR350 allows you to specify this. I figure that this is close enough to WPA2.

I used to have MAC filtering enabled too, but after reading over and over that it's pretty useless, I just left it turned off after the last firmware upgrade.
