This is useful stuff.
Any additional pointers to information on average bandwidth required based on successful testing and if there are latency issues with VOIP over EV-DO? _________________ Kodaypak |

I live in Brooklyn and have been using Verizon EVDO through a KR1.
I'm only getting slightly better than 56k modem speed, when it's working, so VoIP would be impossible until Verizon upgrades the network.
VoIP needs at least a decent DSL connection.
Unless, of course, my area is just a bad one. _________________ I am Rushkoff |

This is interesting. I'm considering Sprint EVDO, because I live in an area with no cable or DSL, and Sprint's maps claim they cover my area.
If I'm going to start paying $60/month for EVDO service, I'm looking for ways to shave costs elsewhere. Replacing my $50/month POTS line with $25/month VOIP looks tempting.
Total bandwidth is a concern, since Sprint has a 5 GB/month cap. If I read your post correctly, you used about 7.5 MB for a 15 minute call. Is that correct? If so, thats 0.5 MB per minute. In that case, I don't think my normal phone usage would be a significant problem. I'm not much of a gabber.
I noticed this post is a couple of years old. Does anybody have any more recent info/experience/recommendations? I haven't figured out exactly what I need yet, but I assume I get the EVDO service with a standard EVDO/USB device, then buy an EVDO router and connect my computer and the VOIP device to that. Any specific suggestions on what equipment I should get? |
