I tried a friends S720 for a few days to try out the new Sprint EVDO Rev A in my area. I was very happy with the download speeds I was getting (anything was better than the dial-up I've been using) so I ordered my own S720. So here's the problem - I see the same signal levels with the new card as with the old but my internet browsing is slower than if I was still on the dial -up! My first thought was that there might be a network problem but after three days browsing the web is still painfully slow.
Any suggestions?

Can you borrow your friend's card to see if it's still getting the same speeds? If so, that would allow you to determine if your card is faulty (which isn't all that unusual) or if it is indeed a network problem.

I seemed to have fixed my problem. Out of desperation I deleted the SCM, rebooted the computer, reloaded the SCM, rebooted ... and everything seems to be fine now.

This really puzzles me! My VPN worked fine but normal internet browsing was so slow.

Hi, I'm new here. I found this forum while desparately trying to solve this problem. Can you tell me what SCM is, and how to delete and reboot? I have an EX720 card in an HP dv6000 laptop. It's been fine for 6 months, then a week ago internet speed slowed to a crawl. Sprint says everything is fine, I'm just stuck in the middle of a bunch of heavy-load towers. Supposedly all those smart phones from Christmas are jamming me now. They said more towers will be up in a month. This bites.

I'll give it a shot, Joe. The SCM is the Sprint Connection Manager. Go into the Windows Control panel and use the Install/remove programs to remove the SCM on your computer now. Reboot. Then go to the Sprint site and download the latest SCM, released a couple weeks ago, and install that. Reboot. With any luck you'll be back in business. Why? I don't know! It just worked for me and has been working great the past few days. Good luck and let us know how it works out.

Of course if your EVDO card is your only means of accessing the internet you might want to download the new SCM before you uninstall the old one unless you know how to set up DUN.

After figuring out what SCM is through this newfangled feature you techies call "search", I found the download and acquired it. No difference at all. I assume elliminating the previous SCM wouldn't make the new one work better. I ended up dumping the new one because my wife, who's even less techie than myself, will just be befuddled by it. I've done some more reading and found other instances of old towers and new towers and various bewildering explanations from Sprint. I'll guess I'll take my card in to be tested, then get a tech out to my house if that doesn't work. 62 bucks a month for this!

Remember ... you have 30 days to try it out! If it doesn't work the way you expect it to you can return it to Sprint - no questions asked. Sprint realizes that this technology doesn't work for everyone everywhere.

Joe ... what are the signal levels and speeds are you getting? Do you see download speed changes at different times of the day?

I wouldn't know how to answer the first part. The tech had me test it while I was on the phone with her and she said it looked right. My download wait has been the same day and night for a week. Oddly, everything is fine again as of this morning, Sat. 10:25 AM PST. By the way, I've had my card for 6 months, so no returning now.

My bad, Joe! I see where you mentioned the first 6 months being fine - that does negate the 30 day return.

The signal level is found on the SCM - represented by a negative number. If you go to www.speedtest.com and run the speed test what are your actual readings for download, upload and ping times?

I'm headed into weekend duties so I'm not going to mess with this anymore today. It's working fine right now. If, after the weekend, it slows down again, I'll try to get you those figures. I'll probably need to ask you more questions, like, what's "ping"? Thanks for your help. Have a good weekend.
