|
|
I am glad I found this site as I am having some serious problems with my KPC680 from Alltel. It has already gone dormant twice this far into the post, righteous huh? Well, my problem is it seems to go dormant after 30 seconds of no data transfer when I am on the web. For instance, it will stay connected the whole time a song is loading on myspace, or a video on you tube is loading, but sure as the sky is blue it will go dormant upon completion of the load. Sometimes I get lucky and can click something really quick (within the first 2 dormant blinks of the light) and the load will kick it back to a working state again (for the time it takes to load whatever I may have clicked).
I use my laptop for school, both online and at univ. and needless to say it is near impossible to do with this problem I am having. I have already tried a couple things after searching google, which brought me here. I found a thread nearly the same as mine and someone told him to turn off mobile IP as it will keep it from going dormant (for him anyways), so I tried it with no difference. I also found the supercharged evdo thread, knowing it wasn't really related to my problem but thought maybe it would help, I have no idea what it does but I am desperate to find a solution.
Thanks in advance to all who try and save my sanity. (27 total times dormant from start of post)

| Have you considered that the card may just be a bad one? How long have you had it? Still under warranty? Is it covered under the new insurance? If any of these allow you to take it back and exchange it that's what I'd do. This certainly shouldn't be happening. |

I think I'm actually going to disagree with Bigdave (Dave, next time you have your card in a laptop with the QLM window viewable watch how often you see "dormant" in the connection status -- it's rather amazing. I bet mine goes dormant at least 30,000 times per day while I'm working. Since you and I both typically have our cards in a router we just don't see it happening.)
MontronuiM -- It's too bad the QuickLink Mobile software doesn't display something more meaningful and less distressing -- like "waiting" instead of "dormant." Dormancy is a normal state when you're not actively using the connection (uploading, downloading, browser sending a page request, receiving mail, etc.).
A cell site can only handle a finite number of *active* connections, so when you're not actively using your connection it more or less goes on hold until you make another request. You aren't losing your connection, it's just standing aside freeing up the resource for someone else to use. When you return to active use the connection comes out of dormancy and handles your request. Unless the cell site is congested, this should be nearly instantaneous (but remember we're talking about a mobile connection which by nature has much more lag than a cable or dsl connection).
Think of it this way -- if it didn't work like this you'd have a hard time getting connected on a congested site at all.
Like I said above, my card goes in and out of dormancy thousands of times a day and it has little, if any, impact on my work -- so unless I'm misunderstanding and you're losing your connection completely and have to disconnect and reconnect every time, I doesn't sound to me like you're having a problem. |

Karlyn, I thought that was it but the OP seemed to describe something different since he referred to not being able to get any work done, etc. I thought he was describing a situation where he was actually having to continuously reconnect. You're right in that I virtually never run mine without it being in the router though. Oh well . . . . . live and learn huh. |

Hey Bigdave -- no need for -- I read the OP's post several times before deciding it was probably a misinterpretation. I also remember freaking a little when I saw "dormant" the first time or two (followed by ah-ha! when it automatically returned to work ).
Hopefully Monstro will come back and clarify... |

Hey Mon,
You are not alone in your issues with the kpc680. I consider myself one of the most laid back folks you would ever find.. This whole alltel, kpc680 thing has fire pouring out of my ears on a daily basis. I'll start by saying this is my 2nd card. The first I attempted to return withing the 2 week period to be told... Oh its just the card try another. Of course it works fine for a day or so and then I go over my time and now am stuck in a nice 2 year contract. This card / service has worked flawlessly 2 times in a 5 month period. Yes 2 times!!!! Ive heard everything from the card, to my area to the entire service on the east coast to my prl.. Ive been on hold for hours at a time to be told.. Oh go see your local rep. Ive left messages(unreturned mind you) and visited my local store to be told ..oh he's on lunch. Its beyond pathetic and is without a doubt the worst purchase I have made in my entire LIFE!!! The whole dormant thing is unexplainable at this time. For those that comment on it going dormant after a few minutes being normal.. sure that's fine.. its the fact that it never comes out of dormancy and you are forced to log off, sometimes restart the computer, sometimes refresh the connection. I cannot tell you how many things I have tried to get this service to work. Some days I get 30min in, some it goes dormant every 30 sec.. As you can tell I am beyond upset and will no longer be an alltel customer after this pathetic situation.. Enjoy to those who it actually get it to work.. |

Karlyn is correct in that dormancy isn't the problem and that it is a normal operation of the system.
But it sounds like there is something wrong with your set ups.
I suggest that you remove the driver and software and reinstall it. Maybe that will make some difference.
Also go to a different area, so you will be on a different tower to see if it is the tower that you normally use.
And yes it could be the card. Try it in a different computer to be sure it's not the card or computer. See if you can try someone else's card in your computer.
There has to be an answer, just don't give up. |

Thanks for piping up -- I'd forgotten about your poor experience with the KPC680. (And I had a hard time deciding whether Monstro was having to reconnect each time QLM said dormant.)
I don't remember specifics, but there's someone on here from Nebraska (jfarris?) who did get Alltel to release him from his two-year contract for problems similar to yours. You might PM jfarris and see how that was accomplished.
Also -- there's an external antenna available now for the KPC680, have you tried it (not that I want you to throw good money after bad!)? |

AAHHHH... Both store managers had "just left"... Almost comical these days.. Took me 3 tries to even get on to write this and went dormant and would not reconnect in the middle of typing these 3 little sentences.. |

I called Alltel about this when I got my KPC680. They told me to:
Under WXP go to control panel
Click on phones and modems
Click on your modem (the KPC680)
Click on Advanced
Type at+cta=0
That seems to have worked (most of the time) for me.

I tried it on my phone/modem and it didn't make any difference. It has always gone dormant when no data is being transmitted, but always wakes up when needed.
Of course this only comes into play when connected directly to the laptop. It isn't used when connected to the router. Here's a speed test that I did while I was connected directly to the laptop. I always have slower speeds when connected through the router.
