I'm using a Pantech PX-500 on a Dell 6000 laptop. The PS2 is the slim version with the ethernet port in the back. Do I absolutely need a router and if so which ones? Most of these routers seem pretty expensive. I'm also wondering if my connection would be fast enough. I'm getting 4-6 bars fairly consistently and between 83-90dbm's. I've tested my connection with speedtest.net and speedguide.net and have gotten a DL of 812 kbps w/ 357kbps UL and a ping of 162ms and and as high as 964kbps DL and 227kpbs UL and a ping of 174ms on the other test site. Also could my speed be improved at all , as I live in the NW Ohio area in mid-southern Wood County. I'm in Rev.A coverage. I'm not using any aftermarket antennas' to boost my signal either.

No, you don't need a router. All you need is an adequately long enough Cat 5 or better crossover ethernet cable and an understanding of how to setup ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) under Windows. I'm sure someone here could help you if you need it, but I would search google first.

You CAN use a router if you want to have wireless freedom, but that is up to you.

So I just need ONE cable, a Cat 5 or a crossover cable? Whats the difference in the two?

The link below will explain how to use and make a crossover cable. You can also buy a ready made cable.

xrayman is correct, you want/need a crossover cable. Cat5 is just the grade type. Cat5, Cat5e or Cat6 cables are what you should look for.

However, I know from experience that Macintosh systems as far back as the 2000 Quicksilver G4s do not need crossover cables. Does anyone know if PCs are set up that way yet?

What speed do you think I should be at to comfortably game online? My highest ever connection was at 964kbps DL and 227UL during one test. Other tests had me in the mid 800k's DL and upper 300k's UL.

I just bought a Cat5e cable and will try and see if this works. My test game is Socom:Combined Assault.

I have found the network connection settings for my sprint connection but don't know what else I need to know to connect. It can't be as simple as it sounds. I'm running XP. Do I need to do some weird port configurations at all? That google link helped a little but need some more help.

*I'm using Zone Alarm Free firewall in case anyone needs to know. I'm not sure how to change port settings as I usually don't bother with such things as so not to screw up anything.

Ok, I loaded up Socom and tried getting on to the Socom network. I got an Network Error -612, "There was no response from the DNS server. Please check your network configuration". Any tips here? Thanks.

The cable I bought is a Belkin Fast Cat 5e Ethernet Cable. It doesn't say crossover cable anywhere on the package. Did I get the wrong cable? Wal-Mart didn't have anything that said crossover cable so I chose this.

Well I finally got an actual crossover cable, figured out that ZA free doesn't allow ICS , so disabled ZA and enabled Windows firewall and it worked as far as getting into the Socom network but then couldn't connect any further. I noticed my SCM icon for my connections suddenly waving back and forth between 1xRTT and EVDO , when my ps2 dropped the connection my EVDO Rev A connection slowly comes back. I wonder if I'm just not close enough to a tower or what. I may try closing my browser and see if that does anything.
