It's worth noting their terms of service:
If you're using an pcmcia card (a.k.a. pc-card) and their unlimited service, you're prohibited from streaming or downloading music, for example:

Unlimited NationalAccess/BroadbandAccess cannot be used: (1) for uploading, downloading or streaming of movies, music or games; (2) with server devices or with host computer applications, including, without limitation, Web camera posts or broadcasts, automatic data feeds, telemetry applications, automated functions or any other machine-to-machine application; or (3) as a substitute or backup for private lines or dedicated data connections. NationalAccess and BroadbandAccess data sessions automatically terminate after two hours of inactivity unless used with a Mobile IP-capable device. We reserve the right to limit throughput or amount of data transferred, deny or terminate service, without notice, to anyone who uses Nationalor amount of data transferred, deny or terminate service, without notice, to anyone who uses NationalAccess or Broadband Access in any manner prohibited above or whose usage adversely impacts our network or service levels. If you're using a Smartphone with an unlimited plan, you're prohibited from using it to connect your laptop to the Internet, for example:

I just spoke someone in the data services side of Verizon (866-658-8823). She said that if you use the PDA phone (the AudioVox XV6600) as a modem, you switch from the PDA/Blackberry $45/month plan to the $80/month Aircard plan.
She didn't specify if the switch is automatic. |

As the service grows in popularity, do you think they will everntually up the bandwidth after realizng everyone wants to be wireless and do all the things they are used to with land lines?

Over the long run, they'll up the bandwidth for other reasons. I'm sure they realize the demand, it's just a question of cost and deploying the technology.

And they do it. I was downloading updates for Fedora Core Linux and watched my download speed go from 144kbits to 9.6kbits and stay there for an hour before it jumped back to 144kbits. I verified it wasn't on the server side. It was definately Verizon reclaiming bandwidth. I found it odd that they didn't just dump the connection, they slowed it to a crawl instead. I have also noticed that they kill your connection after 1435.2 minutes and in some cases lock the modem in the process, requiring you to reboot. I guess it's their tactic to not notify you that you're doing something wrong, instead they just mess with your data pipe, probably because the average person wouldn't be able to determine the exact cause of the problem. Personally, I'd rather have them call me on my landline and tell my to knock off all the downloading. At least that would be more honest. |

The initial Fedora Core Linux is about four full CDs and the updates can be anywhere from 2 meg to 500 meg. Fedora Core is basically a bleeding-edge Linux distribution, so there is a lot of flux; lot of updates. |

Sometimes they put this stuff in the contract but do not enforce it unless you are doing something looney. I hope this is the case, because if they think they can limit me in this way and still charge $80/month, they will lose a customer.
I do not download a lot, but if I want to do a download, I should be able to do a download. Otherwise why would I want this bandwidth?  Duh! |

Exactly. It's a matter of, "What part of unlimited don't you understand." If Verizon doesn't mean it, they sure the heck shouldn't say it. But until a judge holds these big companies feet to the fire, they'll keep on with these practices. |

Two things here. First, yes, a carrier can throttle throughput on any protocol, port, or user if they wish, just like any other network administrator - but I am not aware of any carrier actually doing this yet. It may eventually happen as a reaction to abuse or simply to make everyone share the spectrum more equally. Remember this is a shared connection - you may simply have seen the results of others sharing your bandwidth. Since it is the nature of the technology, you can see why carriers want you to get your stuff quick, then get off and let others play.
The second issue - Your carrier did not kill your connection for any malicious reason - the PDSN is designed with "timers" for your session. This cleans up any hung PPP sessions on the PDSN. You might notice that 1435.2 minutes is very close to the 24-hour timer for your session. I'd be grateful that your carrier is using 24 hours, many are tighter than that.

| Has anyone found Sprint's terms of service? I couldn't find any. Sprint has much more bandwidth, sprectrum and towers per user so may not have this restriction. |

Yes, Sprint of course has a terms of service but I can't find it to determine the restrictions. It would be significant if they did not have that restriction so is worth discussing.
We support Treo 650's with all carriers and found that only Sprint allows bluetooth DUN to laptop as well as streaming any kind of data so they may not have this restriction on EVDO. It's valid to point out.
I'm confused on the cheerleading comment because we use both Sprint/Verizon cards. I happen to be posting more info about Sprint because there appears to be less knowledge about Sprint on this site. And I have posted sources to support facts. If this board is intended to be biased towards Verizon and not give Sprint a chance as a player, let us know so that we know where this site stands.
If you'd like, I'll stop discussing Sprint's advantages even if there are some. |
