By all means, keep posting.

These boards DO have more information related to Verizon, but I believe this is from larger coverage and more customers. As Sprint rolls out and delivers coverage, I expect a lot more postings in the Sprint Forums up here on EVDOforums.com

The purpose of these forums is to help EVDO users (Verizon, Sprint, AllTell, etc.).

You and me both. I will also share any EVDO knowledge on here and at my second home. See Sig.

Thanks for posting this. I didn't know about this until now, even though I searched for it many times. I still can't find the document that stipulates that. As a result, last night I cancelled my Rhapsody streaming music account and today finalized the cancelling of the Real somethingorother via telephone, since I have no way to access it due to those claimed terms. It would be nice to know of the terms are actually real. Anybody have a link? I'm sure I can find it somewhere in my copious and difficult to access files.

I just don't see why they have to make it so complicated, or be so nasty about it--why call it a "violation" of TOS. If I were them, I would have the TOS just say something simple like:

The service is not offered as a substitute for the heavy-traffic capable systems such as DSL or Cable, since heavy use can impact phone call quality and availability. We reserve the right to discontinue service if, in our own discretion, we conclude that the usage of the service is negatively impacting the services we provide in any particular area.

I love Alltel. I routinely transfer gigabytes upon gigabytes of data via their EVDO here in Oklahoma City, and it's all you can eat for $59/month with nationwide 1xRTT roaming. Smile

Thanks. I saw that, but it refers to a main terms of service, which do not exist.

I checked my usage: first month was about 4GB, and then about 1GB per week the next few weeks. I recently stopped using it as much after hitting this thread. I even cancelled Rhapsody as a result of reading this thread. So, somebody's getting less money because of the claims of the site as you linked. Anyway, I wonder what my use will be in the future as a result of my reduced use.

When I realized high use may impact the network, I pushed it all to night time. Lately, I have been having too much battery trouble to run it at night, and I've been more cautious about heavy use, so I haven't even been doing that. For some reason, when I'm doing "nothing" on my connection, and I monitor the use in the stats monitor, half the time it says dormant, but the rest of the time it says quite a flow. Background applications are using up too much bandwidth. Sometimes I catch IM processes using CPU and network for no reason -- are they reselling resources without my consent or knowledge? I have a bunch of spyware checkers, and they report nothing.

So, the service is only a third as useful after reading this thread, and I am still wondering if I fit within what they expect for bandwidth requirements. I also wonder how much of that is rogue net use by bad programming and theft of services on my box by standard installed programs (almost entirely a Microsoft problem). Also, I know Gentoo is very inefficient in the method it uses to update packages (instead of bdiff & bpatch which it could do, it just downloads entire packages all over again despite very little different in each package from previous versions).

Your spyware checkers are WRONG. You are infected with spyware and/or trojan/worms. Block these with your firewall until you figure out where they are dug in and can remove them. ANY bandwidth going out without your explicit knowldege and approval is indeed unneeded and harmful. It is by definition spyware or a trojan. If you don't have a network monitor with tracing capability then get one. If you do, use it and configure your firewall to block the offensive apps and IPs

Yea, unknown network traffic is troubling, but could be harmless. It’s amazing how many applications have internet ‘feelers’ built in to check for product updates and the like. I’m not a fan of this in general, and so set the firewall to ask for access each time. I like to know what’s going on on my machine.

Just pick up a free copy of ZoneAlarms firewall and set all applications to ‘ask before use’. It can be a real eye opener. If something asks for access and you don’t know what it does, deny it and see if anything breaks. I’ve caught lots of these little ‘harmless’ updaters this way. Real Networks is one of the worst in my opinion.

FYI - ALLTEL never wrote any data restrictions in their TOS. So if you are concerned about the Verizon TOS, and you can get ALLTEL's service...

Folks,

They can and they do enforce their FAP. I got a letter Saturdy telling me they are terminating my service on Tuesday (tomorrow). They didn't even ask why I had used 10GB of bandwidth over 30 days on their "unlimited" broadband over wireless. I need their service for my work. I VPN inot my networks to prevent having to drive 45 miles to the base when something needs fixed.

Plus this low-down dirty play of not giving me a chance to talk to them (they don't work on weekends or holidays) makes me almost want to go out and get a lawyer.

Is there a verizon rep on here? I need your service for my (and my family's) livelihood.

Mike

Too late. I've already switched to Sprint. Oh yeah. I'm also convincing my family and friends to leave Verizon.

How can you falt Verizon for inforcing there rules. Do you get mad at the police when they give you a speeding ticket? Just beacuse you broke the rules in the contract dosent mean everyone needs to suffer poor phone quilty. I def understand it must suck to have your internet shut off but you recived the terms and conditions when u signed up for service.

(On my soapbox)

I "falt" verizon for their tactics.

Nope, the police do not take away my license or my car for speeding. Plus speed laws are well known. Besides, I don't get speeding tickets.

Have you purchased anything from a Verizon store? The acceptable use policy was not in the 1.5 inch wide x 28 inches long cash register receipt contract that had lettering five pixels tall. There was a reference to a web address for the AUP.

I have no idea what phone quilty is. If you mean quality, My phone quality never suffered when my system was online. If they can't maintain their networks, they need to get out of the business. Don't ever call it broadband and charge $60 a month when all you wish to allow is reading web page and managing email. I could have gotten that with a $6.95 "People PC" internet connection. I needed the speed because of my job. Sprint doesn’t care if I download music on my paid music service or movies on my paid movie service. They also don’t care if I download software and play games on my Xbox Live.

Verizon will no longer be used by anyone in my family. They have lost a formerly loyal customer, and I'm taking as many with me out of their networks as I can. "CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?"

(Off my soapbox)
