Usually the speed limit is well posted and it's not a problem following the rules. Sounds like Verizon needs to spend some time educating their sales people as to the limitations of their service. Chances are when a buyer walks into a store to look into broadband service for the first time these limitations are never brought up and should not be hidden in fine print.

It's not an inexpensive service and the term "unlimited" seems perfectly resonable and exactly that to an average buyer. If current technology can't support "unlimited" use it should be well stated by the seller.

Wow.. wrong on so many counts....

1) the 6600 was the only pda which tethers with no extra charges or setup. 45 bucks a month or whatever...
2) the fee to tether with verizon cellphones is 60 bucks, which INCLUDES the full data plan... The only exception is if you have a data only price plan on your account, in which case they bring it up to 80 bucks.

Oh, and it's not automatic. You call and ask them to turn it on, and at that point you stop getting "invalid username and password" errors.

It does seem clear that Verizon is abusing their customers. The terms of service, as noted above, are never disclosed to customers - we are offered a URL, and that is supposed to inform us of the restrictions on service. Billing customers for "Unlimited Mb", and advertising unlimited broadband are not compatible with the 5-10GB floating ceiling that Verizon has placed on users.

I was a happy Verizon customer for seven months, until they pulled the plug on me. As soon as they terminated my service, guess who I called? I called booster-antenna/EVDOinfo to sign up for Sprint EVDO.

I did go a step further, however, and contacted a high-level Verizon person (regional director?) to share my concerns about their "unlimited" service. This had an immediate effect, as my service was restored within 24 hours. The odd part is that I never asked for my service to be restored - I was called by a Verizon rep, who informed me that they would be re-activating my service - I told them I did not authorize them to do so, and please not to do that as I had made alternate arrangements. Strangely enough, they went ahead and re-activated me anyway.

Now I am waiting for the high-level rep to finish contacting Verizon's legal department about my two-fold request. (btw, they seem to think they honored my request not to re-activate the service - which I am using right now)

My two requests?

1. Confirmation, in writing, that my account will not be terminated for 'excessive' bandwidth use.

2. Verizon absorbs all the costs associated with starting and cancelling service with Sprint.

I believe any salesperson worth their commission would do #2 in a heartbeat. Granting #1 is most likely why the rep is checking with the legal department.

I will make sure to post the final outcome to EVDOforums for all to see. It will be interesting to see if Verizon is willing to match Sprint, or not.

Well, here's the update so far. Verizon terminated my service again on Thanksgiving, this time with no warning of any kind. Of course I thought at first that I was simply having connection difficulties, as I was away on holiday. When I returned to my normal service area and continued to have no connection, I called to discover that I had been terminated again. I informed them that I had been terminated without notice, and the termination charge was again reversed, and my account reinstated. Certainly a hassle, but they do seem willing to try at least. I'll have more updates when they hear back from their legal department on my concerns about their TOS.

Actually I can't see why carriers want me to get off. If they cannot supply the advertised bandwidth because of sharing, then they have oversold the bandwidth.

You are probably too young to remember the busy signals on oversold dialup connections. Companies that couldn't/were unwilling to afford adaquate number of phone lines didn't survive long.

This would seem to be simple, certainly they have oversold the bandwidth. Don't they want you to get off because your presence may highlight their problem to many other users and cause them to lose more revenue than they lose by just terminating you?

Your dialup comparison is interesting. I must have been around at the time but apparantly wasn't in a business big enough to have several lines. Very Happy

Actually I was referring to the ISP not having enough telephone lines in their modem pool. Telephone lines at the time cost around $50 per month for a “business” line, and ISPs would tend to not want to pay for enough for their customer base, resulting in all lines usually being busy. A customer wanting to dial in would have to wait for someone else to hang up before they could get a connection. This was referred to as having excessive busy signals.

ISPs who did not oversell their resources tended to have fewer busy signals and as a result better customer satisfaction and more customers … which resulted in buying more telephone lines … ad nausium. VZW seems to have failed to learn many of the lessons from the pioneering days of the internet. I guess when you get to a certain size those lessons no longer apply; or maybe they just need to be re-learned.

It is unacceptable for Verizon to do what they are doing! Why would anyone bother to subscribe to Verizon is beyond me.

Thanks to this forum, I have mad the decision this week to purchase the U720 from the EVDO.info website and go with Sprint! I am waiting to receive it as I type, and I know it will be an awesome experience, just like the entire purchase process was.

I was reluctant to go with Sprint ONLY because of the Mac support issue. But since there is a "work-around" AND and actual driver release from Novatel, I thought, to heck with Verizon and their Mac support. I want to be able to enjoy my internet and I don't care if I cannot see my signal strength!

Keep posting people. Knowledge is power!

it's bad network management if you ask me. AT&T has similar management. To top it all off they both now restrict data usage to 5gb. Why would these companies piss on their customers like this?

Bandwith is already being upgraded..Hang in there folks. Network takes time to grow out and big $$$$$$$$$$...Its comming as fast as we can..

As far as being limmited on streaming audio and video?Nothing could be further from the truth..I have my home network on a EVDO revA card fed through a KR2 and I can watch HD quality video from ABC.com on my 3 laptops and my desktop..All the while playing Call of duty 3 on my PS3..

Once this network gets to the level it needs to be at, the cable companys are going to be dropping there prices big time..

I think they could have and should have upgraded by now. however, i do understand the complexity, and cost of expanding a network such as that; on top of expanding nearly everyday in day-to-day business as more and more people log onto the net. But their business has been raking in the dough last year. Is the economies status playing a role in this hesitation to expand?

In IL they DO take your license for speeding. You can get it back by following the rules (paying the fine or winning in court) but they take it on the spot.

And, I don't think Verizon repoed your data card; they just stopped service on it Smile

True in a way..

Have to look at big picture its all about numbers and money..
ALL companys want there TV adds to say they have biggest network and most coverage/fastest bah blah..

With that said they all build there network to do what they advertise. But they tend to do the minimum required to stay in the good graces of FCC and Lawyers not to mention meet deadlines..Then they work on improving the quality dead spots/Bandwith..

Its all whats in the budget.. CEO and share holders get paid first Smile
This doesnt even take in to account the fact that VZW is buying up the smaller mom and pop cell companys and all the spectrum they can get there hands on..

It took man years to perfect the Land line style phones.This too will take a few more years to perfect..


Just my 2 cents for what its worth.. Wink
