Here's a weird problem. I had a V640, worked fine under Tiger. Got a V740 right around the time I got Leopard. downloaded the new version of VZAccess for Leopard from Verizon, but the downloads are pretty slow - like 125kbps, but uploads are around 500kbps. I thought the card was messed up, but switched back to the V640 and got the same results. Tested the V740 in a Vista machine and got 900kbps downloads, so the card is fine.
I think the card is fine, but maybe VZAccess is messed up. I've heard you can run the card without VZAccess, but it keeps giving me a modem error - both as a Novatel and as "other".
I tried this on a pristine OSX account, nothing loaded on it, got the same results.
help?

Greetings Allison,
And a warm welcome to the forum from an ice laden forest clearing in Missouri, where we're working out the same issue as you are but with different modems (apropos I see from your experience that the anomaly isn't confined to USB..that was one vague theory).
You can read about our experience in this thread...
http://www.evdoforums.com/thread7387.html
...especially my last post and Michael's post a few up from that, in which he says that they experienced the exact same thing at a Christmas party they had on the 1st, that they had gotten it partly resolved, and that they would be working on it further and would write a tech note on the subject. He said to email 3G and they should have something by Monday or Tuesday the 3rd or 4th.
I only noticed his post this last Monday the 10th, though, and wrote to 3G immediately--and still anxiously await word. I'll let you now as soon as they clue me in on the promised tech note; so far I've not heard anything from them.
I do have a couple of questions for you:
Probably you were using VZAccess 3.7.0 for the V740 and 3.3.1 for the V640? And I don't suppose you tried whichever older version you do have to see if it recognized the V740 (probably it won't, but...)? If you didn't try that, you might, and then see if that makes whatever it is go away.
From my own experience, the high-ul/low-dl speed thing seemed to have to do with a combination of the newer VZAccess software, the newer modem, and it's/their integration with the Mac OS (10.4.10 in this case). It would be nice to know whether you can use the older software and whether it changes things for you, since I didn't get the chance in the span of my test drive to isolate that element adequately, only partially--and indeed that might be exactly how the element is involved: partially.
Anyway, hopefully I'll hear from Michael/3G today and we'll finally know what in the world is going on--and I can finalize my EVDO plans and happily let go of the end of my rope, which is where I am now at 26K dialup! |
