Does anyone know of EV-DO client hardware that I can put in a handheld, such as an SD or CF card?
It seems like an obvious and easy sell: EV-DO being mobile Internet, and handhelds being very popular mobile clients. |

| I agree. I would love to have either one for my Dell Axim which can use either SD or CF. |

Apparently Sprint supports a 1xRTT CF card or they once did. I don't know if other service providers support it, or if the card could be used with them anyway.
Note that it's not EV-DO. 1xRTT is the previous generation technology, running at 50-80 Kbps in my experience.
Lacking an EV-DO alternative, though, it might be worth it for some people.
Also, there are PCMCIA (a.k.a. 'PC Card') to CF adapters. I.E., they allow you to plug a PCMCIA card into a CF slot. I'm sure not all PCMCIA cards would work, but it might be worth testing an EV-DO PCMCIA card with it. |

| I used 1xRTT for a couple of years. My sense is that it is fine to use for email but is not all that great for web surfing. I am intrigued by the idea of a PCMCIA to CF converter and wonder if that would work to let me use my V620 with my Dell Axim. If so, that would be the perfect solution since I wouldn't have to open up a new account. |

I've used 1xRTT for a few years also.
If you have access to a desktop computer on a broadband connection, you can speed up the experience by creating a low bandwidth remote control session to the deskop, e.g. via VNC or RDP (Windows Remote Desktop), and then browsing the web, etc from the desktop. i.e.:
Internet -> Desktop -> (Remote control software) -> 1xRTT -> PDA
As long as the 1xRTT connection is fast enough for the remote control session, you get things at near-desktop speeds. It also gives you access to any software that runs on a desktop but not on your PDA.
Of course, you need a desktop. My laptop is often in my bag when I'm using my PDA, and I'm not buying a desktop just to route my PDA access (though it is tempting ...). |
