Hi Ganga!
Well my new KR1 fro 3G will be here this afternoon. I've been running my Direcway on a tripod which has been fine, but a pain in the arse to set up and aim ect. Verizon told me last week broadband rev A will be here no later than March 1st! Now I've always had a Verizon aircard (580) for travel and back up due to business, but ordered and received my USB 720 car and will use that with the Kr1.
Here's my question.
1. I have a pumped up Lynksys WTR54G which I use now. I can cover the entire campground I'm camp host at. I've been told I can simply turn the wireless mode off on the KR! and hard wire it to my WTR54G just like I do know with my Direcway modem and use it as the transmitter instead of the KR1 I was also told I'd have to change the IP address on the router as the 2 can't compete (KR1 and WTR54G). The KR1 has a IP of 192.168.0.1 and the WTR54G has an IP of 192.168.1.1. why would there need to be a change? It should work just like the Direcway does with the WTR54G.
2. My WTR54G has 2 after market 9dbi antennas. I know I can tell the WTR54G to use say the right antenna to transmit so couldn't I simply remove the left antenna from the WTR54G and replace the stock antenna on the KR!?
Now until Verizon gets it's broadband going here (Morro Bay/San Luis Obispo CA.) any time now I'll probably mostly use the Direcway as my download speeds are 700-800. Once the Verizon Broadband Rev. A is here I'll discontinue the Satellite. Save $60 a month too. Most everywhere I'll travel and be Broadband will be available and if not can live with national Access for short periods.
Just a quick background... I'm a full-time RV'er (retire fire captain) and hosting at state parks here on the coast.
Thanks in advance!!

Holly Crap!!
Well nobody responded so here's what I did and found. Unbelievable!!!
Well first off the Lynksys antenna and the KR1 anttena's are NOT interchangeable...
OH hooked up KR1 out of the box. Effortless and worked right off the bat. We won't have the broadband rev! for another month or 2 so had it running on National access which I'm used to. Just glad all went well and worked right out of the box. Now for the Holy Crap stuff!!......
I went in and disabled the wireless mode in the KR1, then ran a cable over to one of my ports on my pumped up WTR54G. What in the world!!!!??? It's now faster than my Direcway satellite and blazing!!! I ran to campsites down to my buddy who was helping me test things and he said when i ran the cable over to the WTR54G his page loading doubled and asked what the hell I did?
How can this be?????????? I do NOT have broadband yet and still on National access, but now connected to my WTR54G using the KR1 as a modem only I am smoking here! I have no explanation and if it's this fast now what the hell kind of speed will I have when the broadband revA comes in?
Can anyone explain this????????

| It may not be that the speed is faster, but what you're actually seeing is the drastic reduction from the satellite response time to the EVDO response time. I've seen a ping as high as 2 seconds on satellite, the highest I've seen on my Rev A card is ~350 ms. |

Would be interesting to see actual before and after speed tests to see exactly what the holy crap part is all about. Holy crap means different things to different people!!
Maybe Rev A is there already. Wouldn't be the first time someone from one of the carriers was wrong about what service was available in any particular area. What speeds are you getting? That'll let you know for sure. |

LOL! the holy crap came from speeds from the KR1 and Verizon USB 720. It seems so much after than it was with just the regular 580 aircard and the National Access. It shows I'm connecting 3G.
Suggestions on accurate speed test both download and upload?
I've visually compared the Sat and the KR1 and other than a little latency they both seem about the same. With the Sat I'm getting 700-800 DL
Haven't been able to find a way to get accurate speeds of the KR1. any help here?? |

Not that they're extremely accurate but try using something like http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ and/or www.speedtest.net
For checking latency I just always go to command prompt and ping a site like google or something. Try pinging the same site over different times of the day to get a good picture of what you have going on. Speeds vary by the minute but really vary by various times of the day obviously being affected by the amount of traffic on the tower you're connecting to. Let us know what you find. |

I am having fits with the KR1 staying connected on my wireless network. I am curious about when you plugged in the ethernet cable from the KR1 to the WRT54G had you reset the IP of the WTR54G? or did the default IP address work without resetting it?
I am currently waiting on a rma from my seller of Alltel network. They have acknowledged a problem with the kr1 and have agreed to replace it. |

darren.....
What I did was plug the KR1 into the LAN port on the WRT54G and yes I changed the IP address of the KR1 to 192.168.0.2 It has worked flawlessly! My WRT54G is pumped up pretty good and I share my connection with the other camp host here in the campground where I am so I wanted the extra signal strength. The only reason I had to change the IP though was my Direcway is stil running for another 30 days and D-Link by default uses the same IP as Direcway does for their modem. The WRT54G wouldn't have been a problem as it has a different IP altogether. Oh and when running through the other router I simply turned off the wireless mode in the KR1 basically using it as a modem and the WRT54G as the router/access point.
I did however buy the after market 5 dbi antenna from 3G ans did some tests and boy it did improve the range of the KR1 itself! Not quite the hot rod the pumped up WRT54G is, but the 5 dbi antenna sure made it close and a lot better!
Sorry to the others for a late reply on my speed tests as I've had to come over to the valley to help with my mom who is in the final stages of cancer.
I thought I was getting speeds as fast if ot faster than my satellite. Moro Bay is expecting the Broadband Rev.A any time between now and March 1st. Why my KR1 seemed faster than my satellite was two things. #1. I am getting on the coast a good 3G speed of about 150-200 KB which is pretty good and #2 I wasn't seeing the latency that I have become to know and used to on Direcway so overall it made it seem much faster.
I'm currently in the valley helping my parents and enjoying a great true broadband connection speed averaging about 1,3 MB!

Thanks for the headsup. I am currently boxing up the kr1 and sending it back for a replacement. When the router is working it is about 650 down and 200 up which is great. I also live in a rural area but near an interstate that has ev-do coverage. My main problem has been disconnects when using the ethernet and also wireless at same time from the desktop and my daughter from her laptop.
When I get my new router I hopefully will get a stable connection across both wireless and wired parts of the network. If not, I plan to purchase the WRT54G router and wire it to the KR1 and disable the wireless on the KR1. It is important that both sides work. I run a major website in the area and my daughter just almost failed an online college final exam because of this problem.
Speed hasn't been an issue. Just a stable connection. It is frustrating having to unplug the router and plug it back in to maintain any connection
Thanks firedude |

Hopefully your new KR1 will be fine. I've not had any problems with the dropouts. Once in a great while I'll have to reboot the KR1, but it's been pretty stable both on it's own and with the Lynksys. The KR1 and USB 720 have been a winning combo with me. I used to have problems with the Sierra Wireless 580 Card which would go dormant all the time and give me fits, the main reason along with mobility is why I went with the KR1 and USB 720. No more issues and smooth service.

I hope the new one is stable. It is going to be tedious around here while the router is gone. Sharing the aircard KPC-380 between our laptops will be trying
I justified the cost of the new internet system by unplugging the dialup and canceling land line service.
We're strictly wireless at home now. |

| I have the KPC680 in a KR1 router using the Novatel Expresscard to PCMCIA adapter. The KR1 has the wireless disabled and my WRT54G router is plugged into 1 of the ports on the KR1 from it's WAN port. The WRT54G is runing dd-wrt and utilizing the WDS featuer to distribute the wireless over my farm using WAP54G access points as WDS clients. This works great, I'm in a EVDO Rev 0 coverage area using Alltel service. I have also purchased the antenna adapter from 3gstore but have found that I have to plug it in the inner most external port for the KPC680 to function correctly. I don't know if that is a service provider thing or not. I noticed in 3gstore's review of the KPC680 that it advised plugging external antennas in the outer most port. |

I am heading to the post office to send back the kr1 for a new one. I am using an express card to usb adaptor and have it plugged into my desktop computer as I type this.
It is running 570 down and 243 up according to speakeasy.
Thanks for the replies. I think if the new kr1 router doesn't do well when I get it then I will buy the WRT54G router and do as you all have done. It makes sense to me that you can use the kr1 as the modem and for wired connection to my desktop pc and then ethernet over to the WRT54G and use it as the wireless router.
The seller of the router seems to think it is a problem from kyocera. He basically acknowledged that there had been some problems with the wireless side of the router. I hope I get a good one next time
THanks guys. I may be back with some dumb questions when I get ready to configure all of this. |

Any update on the new kr1 darren? Hopefully it will be fine.
Mine has worked flawlessly. One thing I've noticed is it works really well using it as a modem with the wireless mode turned off. Running the sugnal through my pumped up WRT54G really works sweet. More rnage of course as I have the WRT54G pumped up. No dropped signals wirther and have another camp host an an occasional camper/friend using it. so far so good!
I took it to the valley with me and used it all by itself. I stayed with my son and he didn't have Internet at the time and it worked flawlessly all by itself. I even stopped in the middle of nowhere and plugged in the car adapter and used my PDA to send email. pretty cool!

I got the new KR1 about a week ago and it works better than the previous one. I went ahead and ethernetted it to a wrt54g and disabled the wireless on the kr1. Actually the wrt54g required no configuration. The IP addresses or the wrt54g and the kr1 are different. I am using the kr1 like a modem and using the wrt54g as the internet access point and wireless broadcaster.
Other than the occasional loss of signal from the cell tower to the air card I have had no problems. The wrt54g is a lot stronger on it's wireless broadcast than the kr1.
Thanks for the headsup.
The only problem now is the occassional dropped connection from the cell tower. But the last couple of days it has been steady as a rock |
