Question... I have a Verizon AC595U hooked to a Cradlepoint CTR350 router that I use in a motorhome. Is there any problem with keeping the router and aircard connected between uses, or should it be turned off when not in use?
I don't imagine that keeping the CTR350 on all the time would hurt it, but I'm really wondering about the aircard being connected all the time with power to it. Does that tax evdo bandwidth at the cell towers, for example? ...or is there any harm to the USB modem by keeping it constantly connected?
Thanks,
Robin |

| I thought about this also but I concluded that it isn't any different than keeping your cell phone turned on all the time. You don't turn off your cell phone after each call do you? |

strolin,
I had the same thought, but the question is... Is a USB aircard that is "connected" to EVDO broad band service like a cell phone that is on but not connected, or is it more like a cell phone that is connected? I just don't know. |

I use a Merlin S720 plugged into a WRT54G3G-ST router and it runs 24/7 and this provides internet access to three wireless computers any time if needed
This has been in operation for about 6 months. It is unplugged during lightening storms |

Keeping a router and device turned on all the time would not 'tax' whatever tower it maintains a connection to.
Little, if any bandwidth is used to keep a connection alive. |

| However - wouldn't keeping it connected all the time increase your GB usage? It just seems logical that leaving it running - it would constantly be sending and receiving stuff from Verizon's Network - thus increasing your monthly usage numbers? |

all that should be needed to keep a connection alive is a "ping"
thats not even enough to call a "data transmission", really.
yes, it would add to your usage. of course it does.
but no its not going to amount to GB's. not even MB's per month. |

If I wasn't so darn afraid that Verizon would kill my service (I can't get Cable or DSL only DiapUp) by keeping a live connection all the time - I would buy one of your router's in a heart beat! |

I travel fulltime is a motorhome also. I have a Sprint Merlin S720 air card plugged in a Kyocera KR1 router and I never turn it off. I leave it on when driving down the road and I have never had any problems.
In 7 months the router has only hung up two times and I caused it one of those times. I love my set up. |

Everyone,
Thanks for all the responses. I guess the overwhelming feeling is that there is absolutely no reason to unplug the aircard from the "always on" router.
Vpnavy, it looks like you and I can both go for it.
Regards,
Robin |
