If the VZ access manager wasn't recognizing your card, I wouldn't expect this 'dial-up' method to work either. Seems you have a different issue to resolve first.

One other note for people 'dumping' VZ Manager; it's a good thing, but I wouldn't un-install the VZ access manager software. You'll still want it for 'modem maintenance', such as updating the PRL, seeing the signal strength bars (if you have a need to know that, in a new area for instance), firmware updates, etc. Use the 'dial-up' method for everyday access, but you will likely need to have the VZ software on rare occasions.

FYI, VZAccess software installation seems to happen in two stages: first, it updates the firmware and installs drivers, then it installs the VZW bloatware.

If you just need the drivers, download the latest version, let it go through driver installation (on XP/Vista/Se7en, you'll get the "your new hardware is ready to use" popup), then cancel the next stop when it begins to install the software.
