What feature do you want on CradlePoint Router?

I think you will get the NMEA stream from 8889.

If that is enabled. Not quite what you might want but close, and there are converter programs available.

You might also be able to decode what comes out of the GPS page (by looking for the map URL).

For me, I'd like to put my (external USB via serial) GPS on it using a USB hub.

how about a way to see if one is 'roaming'?

what would be really cool is a pref to send email/sms when router determines that it has entered roaming coverage.

This might be a little far fetched, but I would like to have the router also connected to my house phone network.

There are a lot of ways this could go, but my basic goal is to have cell calls loaded onto the house network when I am home. I guess this would involve another docking point on the router for accepting calls to the cell number and then transmitting them on the home service. If more than one phone were attached (a USB hub?) then different ringtones could be generated for different persons. And of course, the cell phone would be charging while sitting in the cradle .....

Does anyone know if these routers have automatic shutoff feature that shuts down the router after a certain amount of bandwidth usage? That would be really useful now that every cellular company is imposing a 5gb cap.

I agree a bandwidth usage monitor with email/sms notifications at predetermined amounts would be great. Especially for those with usage restrictions

another useful feature that should be implemented is being able to use the usb port as a print server. Even better would be able to share usb devices on the network (aka share external harddrives) ... but I'd be very happy with just print server functionality

I would love to see a router similar to the CTR500, but with:

(1) Built-in 4-6 hour rechargeable battery w/ built-in rapid charger. Provides better battery life than PHS350, but keeps the price reasonable.

(2) Accessory battery pack - 12 hour life. Easily carried on a belt. Or it could even be a cradle that the router slides or snaps into to supply the extra power but make it easy to carry in a case. Those that need more battery power can purchase it at a $149 price point. Provides the customer a true, supported solution. provides Cradelpoint additional revenue with decent margin potential. Win-win.

(3) PCMCIA Slot - I know this sounds weird, but do a little research on this. While consumer laptops mostly use ExpressCard, most business laptops from major manufacturers (including HP, Dell, Lenovo, etc.) still come with PCMCIA. If you plan to use an air card in your laptop by default, but switch i to a router when you need to share a connection, having PCMCIA compatibility will still probably appeal to a larger percentage of business users. Sorry, PCMCIA isn't quite dead yet! I would imagine that the majority of air cards are purchased for corporate use. Probably 90% of their laptops (both legacy and current lines) use PCMCIA. By only supporting ExpressCard and USB, they are eliminating a lot of potential sales for travel routers.

(4) Remote GPS tracking. Inexpensive fleet tracking would be great. I would even go so far as to suggest that they offer a variant with the GPS built into the router instead of depending on the one in the card. Since Sprint still lists their NMEA GPS available for free "for a limited time", I wouldn't depend on the provider keeping it free forever. You could have a PHS500 and PHS500GPS model.

(5) A power switch that TURNS THE ROUTER OFF. The one on the CTR500 only turns off Wifi. Counterintuitive and a waste of battery power (usually by accident).

(6) Retractable power cable included. Make life easier on the road.

(7) LED battery meter.

Allow LED battery meter and signal meter to turn off by default when running on battery. My CTR500 keeps the signal meter turned on at all times. I don't know what the button is for. Reduce the power consumption (I realize it is a minimal reduction).

(9) Simple car mount. Build something like the suction cup GPS mounts that are common with Garmin and other GPS units. It can be thrown onto the windshield of a vehicle and plugged into a 12v port in 1 sconds. In-vehicle WiFi and fleet tracking made easy. Plus, again, CradlePoint really can take advantage of opportunities to provide useful and reasonably priced accessories.

(10) Place the battery meter and signal meter to the edge of the router that would be exposed if the router is inserted into a travel case. The current one obstructs your view of the signal meter.

(11) Ruggedized outdoor enclosure accessory. Something that could be mounted for a semi-permanent installation in an outdoor environment - think portable video surveillance type applications.

Here's my 2 cents:

1.) I would like to see a command line interface. This may seem old fashioned, but it makes remote configuration soooo easy. Plus, it would be handy for creating new tools. For example, polling the GPS coordinates through a cli could be interesting.

2.) Better WAN interface management. I would like to plug the ethernet in and a modem and then be able to configure the routes, NAT, MAC filtering, etc. on a per interface level. Not one, but both, running at the same time.

3.) And just for fun, I would like to see a utility in the router that detects if other Wifi networks are in the area and if they're open. If so, connect to the open network (is some sort of WDS way) so my modem plan doesn't get used. I would just like more automation so I wouldn't have to think about it. However, if a CLI was available, this could be implement outside the router.
