PostPosted: Wed Nov 14, 2007 9:30 am    Post subject: Activating AirCard 595 on Linux NOT Windows

We received this message via our support ticket system at 3Gstore.com and it was so detailed that we just had to share it with everyone, and perhaps it will help others.

Quote:
Subject: Activating the Sierra Wireless AirCard 595 on Not-Windows

No "Right of the First Insert"

or

Activating the Sierra Wireless AirCard 595
for Sprint Mobile Broadband
on any Damn Operating System You Want!

by

Kyle Amon

Let everyone and Google henceforth stop claiming that one
MUST insert this card (or any other, for that matter, that
also employs a CDMA extended Hayes AT command set) into a
computer running the M$ Winblows virus before it can be
used with an actual Operating System. Perhaps everyone
else must, but I've never used M$ Windoze and I sure don't
"have to" just because everyone and the great oracle says
I do in order to activate this card. Bullshit. I do not
and, in point of fact, neither do you... anymore. As you
will see below, one can easily activate this card on any
computer one can functionally insert it into.

Massa Gates can't reserve the liberty of deflowering your
card with his diseased excuse for an Operating System
unless you just bitch up and let him. It's like everyone
is rolling over to Micro$oft's "right of the first night"
[1] with their hardware or something. How pathetic. We
could sure use some more John Browns [2] around here these
days.

[1] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Droit_de_seigneur].
[2] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Brown_(abolitionist)].

Unfortunately, this sad state of affairs necessitated that
I burn approximately 21 hours straight in order to get my
card activated. During this time Sierra Wireless, Sprint
Customer Service and the local Sprint Store (that is,
everyone who COULD and SHOULD have helped me) turned me away.
They were all very nice, but basically said, "Oh, I'm sorry,
Lord Gates has the "right of first insert" with your card.
I suggest you allow him to exercise his noble privilege."
All the advice at all the usual internet watering holes for
such things (ie. evdoforums.com, etc.) said one "had to" let
Lord Gates exercise his privilege as well. And every 1337,
top brain, die hard, uber h4xor site I found addressing the
subject basically said, "Well, you just have to bend over."
Well, I don't think so.

Information Required

ESN (Electronic Serial Number), MEID (Mobile Equipment IDentity)
or pESN (Pseudo Electronic Serial Number):

The ESN is a 32 bit long, 11 digit, decimal number (or,
more precisely, a concatenation of an 8-bit and 24-bit
decimal number, explaining why it is 11 digits rather than
10, the actual maximum for a 32-bit number) on the back of
your card and/or the box it came in. You give this number
to the Sprint Customer Solutions representative at the
appropriate phone number above (mine told me I'd get
confused later if I didn't just insert the card and
let the proprietary software lead me by the nose -- yeah,
right).

And, for the extremely anal retentive among you, cards
delivered as of November 2007 do not yet implement an
MEID here since MEIDs are 56 bits long. And even if my
ESN was really a 32 bit long pESN it would begin with 128
rather than the 096 that it does (which is the TIA
Manufacturer ID of Sierra Wireless). So it's not an
obfuscated MEID either, but a real old fashioned ESN.
And all vague references you come across that conflate
these appellations are the usual ignorance, sloth and
consequent imprecision. Even the Quick Start Guide that
comes with the card calls this an ESN/MEID as if these
were in fact synonymous. And my Sprint Customer Solutions
representative told me to look for a 10 digit number
(evidently she was confused). No wonder they think it
can't be activated on anything but Micro$oft Lowbrows
(and the polar icecaps are melting). Whatever. Mooooo.
Now you know better.

MSL (Master Subsidy Lock) or SPC (Service Provisioning Code),
a.k.a Activation Code:

The Quick Start Guide that comes with the card calls this
the "Activation Code" but it is more appropriately called
the MSL or SPC. In any case, it is obtained from a Sprint
Customer Solutions representative via one of the phone
numbers listed above after giving them the card's ESN.

MDN (Mobile Directory Number):

Generally speaking, your card's ten digit "phone number".
This information should have come with your card (mine was
displayed during online ordering and printed on a sticker
affixed to the retail package that arrived), but can be
obtained from the Sprint Customer Solutions representative
as well.

MSID (Mobile Station IDentification):

The real identity of your card, for which the MDN is
merely an alias to facilitate number portability. It is
another ten digit "phone number" that is usually the same
as the MDN, but may, for various complicated reasons, be
different (mine was, of course, different). In any case,
the Sprint Customer Solutions representative will tell
you what yours is after you tell them your card's ESN.

Once you have all the information, use a terminal emulation
program like minicom(1) or a general tty "spud bar" like tip(1)
or cu(1) to connect to the inserted Sierra Wireless AirCard 595
so you can activate it via simple AT commands on a real Operating
System (ie. *nix) rather than via a proprietary, bloated GUI
application on an indenturing virus masquerading as an Operating
System. As for myself, I used kermit(1), which is like an
uber-terminal-emulator-serial-and-network-tty-spud-bar that is
neither for the beginner nor the faint of heart. Smile On Linux
at least, you'll most likely need to connect your tty tool of
choice to /dev/ttyUSB0.

Here begins an annotated AT command session with the card in
order to activate/provision it on, oh yeah, not M$ Windorks!
Note: sensitive values have been changed to amuse the dissident.

[KKA: First, a command to provide some basic information. Yup,
it's a Sierra Wireless AirCard 595 all right.]

ATI
Manufacturer: Sierra Wireless, Inc.
Model: AC595 Rev 1.0 (3)
Revision: p1905800,60608 [Feb 05 2007 11:31:27]
APPL: SWI6800_FP.00.58 2007/02/09 09:58:39
BOOT: SWI6800_FP.00.58 2007/02/09 09:58:39
SWID: SWI6800_FP.00.58 2007/02/09 09:58:39 [GENERIC_00]
USBD: SWI6800_FP.00.58 2007/02/09 09:58:39 [GENERIC_00]
USB VID: 0x1199 PID: 0x0019
ESN: 0x31337ACE
+GCAP: +CIS707-A, CIS-856, CIS-856-A, +MS, +ES, +DS, +FCLASS

OK

[KKA: I didn't run this next command before activating my card,
but it is included here because I should have. I know that Home Addr,
Primary HA and Secondary HA were already set as follows, but that's
all I know for sure about the pre-activated values here.]

AT$QCMIPGETP
Profile:1 Enabled
NAI:vincentfreeman@sprintpcs.com
Home Addr:0.0.0.0
Primary HA:68.28.11.22
Secondary HA:68.28.33.44
MN-AAA SPI:1234
MN-HA SPI:1234
Rev Tun:1
MN-AAA SS:Set
MN-HA SS:Set

OK

[KKA: I did not run this command before activating my card either,
but I should have run it as well. I think at least the MIN value
was unset and probably the MDN value as well, but I am of course
unsure. Anyway, the idea is to run these commands first to be able
to compare "before and after" values. Note that MSID is, of course,
called MIN here (whatever).

AT~NAMVAL?0
MDN: 5556661234
MIN: 5556667890
SID: 0
NID: 65535

OK

[KKA: This is a critical command. This is where you unlock the
card so you can change the values you need to change. Note that
the argument to the command is the MSL (a.k.a. Activation Code)
discussed above.

at~NAMLCK=470753
OK

[KKA: This is where you enter the information that constitutes
almost all you really do to activate the card. Note that the two
ten digit numbers contained in the argument are your MDN and MSID
"phone numbers" discussed above. Be sure to type this correctly.
If you get it wrong you will destroy your card. Just kidding.
You just won't get service until you get it right. I couldn't
resist. Smile

at~NAMVAL=0,5556661234,5556667890,0,65535
OK

[KKA: Now, check that the values have been properly set.]

AT~NAMVAL?0
MDN: 5556661234
MIN: 5556667890
SID: 0
NID: 65535

OK

[KKA: You may need to "reboot" your card (ie. eject and reinsert
it) before executing the next command. I'm not sure this is really
required (I doubt it) but I did it just in case. Either way, you
must execute the next command to begin IOTA (Internet Over-The-Air)
provisioning [a.k.a activation], successful completion of which will
net you a fully "activated" card WITHOUT using M$ Winslows!!! And
for the extremely anal retentive among you, note that this output
is not from the first time I ran this so it is not exactly as it
would be on a first run, just 99.99% or so.]

OK

[KKA: Yeah, that sure was a noisy one. I hope it didn't disclose
anything that anyone would prefer to keep secret. Anyway, let's
look at some status info just to get a warm fuzzy now.]

Well, that's about it. If you have done this on your card, you are
now the fully indentured surf of a modern feudal lord for the duration
of your two year "contract". But at least you avoided bending over
for Micro$haft too. And all that was required to do the "impossible"
was to type the following three little commands...

AT~NAMLCK=470753
AT~NAMVAL=0,5556661234,5556667890,0,65535
AT!IOTASTART

... well, after mental auto-manumission, [3] that is.

[3] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manumission

Finally, note that while an extremely similar procedure would probably
work for activating Verizon service with the Sierra Wireless AirCard
595, it would not be exactly the same since Verizon uses OTASP
(Over-The-Air Service Provisioning) rather than IOTA and, for obvious
reasons, I didn't spend any time figuring out the fine details of this
divergent requirement. Furthermore, EVERY wireless data card that
employs an AT command set almost certainly has a similar procedure
that will work to activate it with a computer that isn't crippled with
M$ Windoors instead of an Operating System. So quit rolling over and
saying "Massa don't let us have the 'right of first insert' with our
cards so I guess we just have to roll over and let Massa have his way
with us and our cards."

Free your mind and your body will follow.

Regards,

Kyle Amon

Epilogue

Here is a list of extended AT commands I compiled that work for this
card. They may be of interest for further poking about. Some of them
are just informational, with or without a question mark at the end. If
they use a question mark at the end, they can almost certainly set value/s
as well by replacing the question mark with an equals sign and appending
the value/s to be set.
