|
|
This thread will discuss real-time GPS tracking with the Top Global MB6800. 3Gstore.com will release a new firmware for the MB6800 that allows real-time GPS tracking with Google Earth.
What is unique about this?
The MB6800 reads the GPS locations directly from the Novatel S720, EX720 or U720, NO additional GPS receiver is required!
Place the MB6800 in a vehicle (need inverter or option vehicle power adapter) and have be able to track the location from outside the vehicle using GoogleEarth.
More info at:
Top Global EVDO Router MB6800 Supports RealTime GPS Tracking
P.S. If you already have a MB6800 and Sprint S720/EX720/U720, you have just about everything you need already. Just the updated firmware and our 16 page PDF that describes how to get it going. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

Michael - the PDF is completely out of date, and does not provide proper steps to enable GPS. Subsequently, multiple people who have purchased this router from you are left in the dark.
Any help on either:
A) updating the PDF instructions
B) posting workarounds here
C) removing this GPS claim
... would be GREATLY appreciated. |

When the GPS module was developed for the KR1, we had some involvement and were able to provide direction and do testing.
The TopGlobal GPS 'feature' was done entirely by TopGlobal and their support for it is abysmal (and I'm being kind).
We've tried to get TG to provide better support for this feature, but lately, the TG tech support is hardly what it once was.
See our 'Router Maker Report Card' for more info, if you like. |

Based on your Report Card blog, I'll guess my email to Top Global about their Press Release of GPS support on the MB6800 being misleading and incorrect will be ignored.

we're on a mission to have cradlepoint provide similar GPS features on their routers, and invite you to send in your request by emailing
suggestions@cradlepoint.com
they've told us that it could be added, if enough demand warranted the time to code and test. so get others to email their 'demand' as well! |

After lots of trial & error, I've gotten GPS working on my MB6800, no thanks to Top Global, mind you...
Here's what I did:
1) SETTING UP GPS: Go to the GPS page on the MB6800 and turn on "Enable GPS Services" but not turn on "Enable Send GPS data to remote GPS server", since that is a different method altogether. After this, I noticed that the GPS page on the MB6800 was on" but wasn't reporting anything but Latitude & Longitude of 254.999, which told me that for starters, the damn router wasn't even detecting a valid GPS location. So for the heck of it, I downloaded and installed the newly posted 1.1.4 pre-release firmware from their site, which got the GPS working:
http://www.topglobalusa.com/download/MB6800-firmware-v1.1.4pre1.bin
2) THE RIGHT URL: Given Sprint (who I use) blocks port 80 and so many other ports, I finally realized why I couldn't see my MB6800 remotely (by pinging it's WAN IP address). Once I figured out the need to use a different port number, and only after I entered the following URL into my browser, did I get a decent response from the router:
http://wanIPaddress:8888/gps.asp (enter your actual WAN IP address from the router where it says "wanIPaddress")
3) Once I got a good GPS response back from that URL, I tried it as a link with Google Earth, and BINGO!
4) DynDNS SETUP: Now that I got the GPS working flawlessly using the MB6800's dynamic WAN IP address, the last step is to add a DynDNS address. After getting an account at DynDNS.org, I went to the DynDNS page on the MB6800 and added my account info. The only problem now, is that when I replace the current WAN IP address with my DynDNS address in my browser, it doesn't work. I've tried http://myDynDNSname:8888/gps.asp (where "myDynDNSname" is replaced with my actual DynDNS account hostname ), and no luck. I'm guessing it's something to do with the port number and the DynDNS hosting service. Any suggestions? |

only thing i can suggest is that you make sure you put in the whole subdomain into the field asking for dyndns subdomain.
in other words, if the dyndns account you set up is
topglobalsucks.dyndns.org
make sure you have that whole value in place and not just
topglobalsucks
oh my. did i say that out loud? |

Ha ha, Alex... I admit, the sample name ain't half bad.
Unfortunately, I'm still stuck. Here's what I've done:
- only when I put the "topglobalsucks.really.biz" as hostname into the MB6800 DynDNS page, do I find that my account at DynDNS get updated with the current WAN IP address of the router. If I try "topglobalsucks.really.biz.dyndns.org", my account doesn't get updated. I assume it's because the MB6800 adds the "dyndns.org" already.
- So now that I know that the DynDNS page on the MB6800 is set up correctly, the next question is, what URL do I use? I've tried the following:
- http://topglobalsucks.really.dyndns.org/gps.asp
- http://topglobalsucks.really.biz:8888/gps.asp
- http://topglobalsucks.really.biz/gps.asp
In the end, the only URL that seems to work is:
What am I missing here, if the MB6800 seems to be populating DynDNS.org with the right IP address???? uugh |

Nevermind -- I tried http://topglobalsucks.really.biz:8888/gps.asp in Google Earth, as opposed to within a browser, and it works fine.
Done.
So I guess now someone needs to seriously update your PDF instructions, as they are very much out of date. |
