I wonder if Verizon is making any efforts for roaming agreements with Alltel as Sprint has.
| I heard a podcast with the CEO of Helio and he was talking about negotiating a lease for the 3G network they would run on in the U.S. The interviewer asked him why Helio chose Sprint's 3G network. Helio's CEO answered that both Sprint and Verizon were approached with an offer. He also mentioned that Verizon had a "premium" network and a "premium" network demanded a "premium" price. In the end they went with Sprint as it met the needs of investors and customers.
I personally think that "premium" network hogwash does work and is in fact Verizon's slogan but not all carriers have caved in to the bullying. Alltel is one of them as they have not carved an EVDO agreement and won't soon because of Verizon demanding a premium price for access to their EVDO network. Iusacell from Mexico also didn't and in fact fought back with reciprocal roaming prices for access to their network and as a result Verizon had to discontinue their North America's Choice plans as they would clearly become unprofitable with the new agreements
On the other hand it seems Sprint is much more reasonable come negotiations time as both Iusacell and Alltel have nice EVDO roaming agreements which actually are pretty good for both Sprint and their roaming partners . |
