Question Verizon EVDO Card

I'm trying to figure something out. I have been using a Verizon PC5740 card for about a year now and usually see download speeds of about 500-700k. The other day I was setting up a new 3G router (D-Link DIR-450) to ship out of state. I used my Verizon card to test the router and noticed that my speeds shot up to 900-1.1Mbps!

What's going on here? Why is the same card in this router so much faster than plugging the card directly into my laptop? The router was in the exact same location as the laptop for my tests.

sounds like maybe software or driver issues to me - but then, I'm a n00b
