I almost bought a new laptop today until I noticed the lack of a PCMCIA slot for my Alltel PC575 data card. I have an adapter for my desktop and normally use a Linksys WRT54G3G-ST but occasionally use the 5750 in the old notebook for traveling. I realize the express bus is the fastest. followed by the PCMCIA and USB but EVDO "broadband internet" is not nearly fast enough to take advantage of any of the above. The wireless companies keep selling the PCMCIA data cards but the user is going to have to locate an old notebook in order to use them and yes, even activate them. Mad Just blowing off steam.

Yep, thats the problem I have run into. I have to go with the KPC 680, a USB modem or tether a phone. It sucks- I keep going back and forth which way i should go...

I like the PC5750 because it's REV A, which will available eventually, has an external antenna connection and is also compatable with the Linksys. The Linksys again is slotted for only a PCMCIA. Alltel only sells one USB card, the Franklin CDU-550AL. I tried the Franklin for a week and returned it because it was only REV 0 and in my area had poor reception. Tethering worked well for me but the cords became a problem. The data card and router is the best way for me. The whole house is a WIFI hotspot no matter which of the three or four computers I use. Throw a wireless print server into the mix and and you are good to go.
