I did find a spot on my roof that I could get a -96 signal. I think its a sweet spot that has a small window. I've decided to give this spot a try. Antenna pointing and mounting should be easy, and I only need about a 50' piece of cable. I ordered a 50' piece of LMR400 with N/male connectors for $30 on ebay. Now I just need to call the 3G store today and order the AMP and Card. Will post my results with some pics. |
It sounds like this is definitely your best bet. Keep the cable short. I would not be surprised if, with the grid antenna in this roof location you can get well into the 80's or better compared to the phone.
I wouldn't be so quick to buy an amp, considering that they're not cheap. You may not need one with the grid antenna in this location. In my experience, you can pull maximum performance from the tower well before you actually reach maximum signal strength.
I don't want to say you absolutely won't benefit from an amp, but I'd try without first. It may be apples to oranges to compare locations, but where I'm at, with a -92 signal, I am getting 95% of the performance of a friend with an 80-ish signal on the same tower, and we're both virtually at max assuming this tower has only one T1 of bandwidth. |

| interesting thread. I've got a tv antenna on top of my roof with a rotor unit on it. I am considering attaching a yagi to it and "dialing in" my signal in the comfort of my living room ..heh. Wonder if it will work. |

Regarding wifi, I recall reading over the years various techniques people have employed to extend their wifi range.
Essentially these have involved narrowing the wifi signal to a beam rather than a sphere. Pringle potato chip cans were used, that sort of thing.
The idea being that the problem of distance for wifi may be resolvable with such a device. However, you might have to re-aim it after a strong wind storm? |

Yes, it will work. You will only have to do it once. Been there, done that, have the signal to prove it.
