No, you need to still have a voice plan to get the $59.99 plan from Verizon (this promotion ends 1/5/06).
Sprint just announced an identical plan, if you have a Sprint phone, you can get the monthly service for $59.99 (I think this ends in November).
If Sprint has the coverage in the places that YOU need, then stick with Sprint. I think it comes down to one question:
Who has the coverage where YOU need it?
The answer to that will tell you which provider is for you. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

Yeah, Sprint it is for me. I just can't stomach 80 a month for the service. I travel all over the US...so I will see how it works out for me:)
Now I wish I got a VZM phone now:) |

Not "No", but Yes.... The question may be one of semantics however. EVERY unlimited data plan (maybe even ever data plan) does in fact include a voice plan .. one where you pay for any voice minutes you use (and only the voice minutes you use). I went thru this last month and my posts on it are here on the board.
As it so happens, my bill from Verizon arrived just today and they did NOT lower my rate to the 59.99 as they said they had. So I called and told them they screwed up. They then claimed they had no record of me ever calling last month (to which I offered to fax them a copy of my cingular bill showing the call). They finally transferred me to a level 2 customer service/accounts guy who appologized and confirmed that I am supposed to get the 59.99 rate and he issued a $20 credit for this month and assures me my account is fixed to be at the $59.99/mo unlimited national access and broadband unlimited data plan.
This guy was knowledgeable about their various options and the differences between them. If some Verizon dealers are claiming that you don't qualify because you have no voice plan then the proper thing to do is challange them directly. Point out that they are wrong in saying you don't have a voice plan and the fact is as I stated above. Further, insist they put you on the lower rate or you will have your account TRANSFERRED to a direct Verizon Wireless Company agent of record (rather than a 3rd party vendor) and then let that new rep. make the change for you. This is equivalent of threatening to cancel your account with the 3rd party without any earlier termination fee since it moves the commission on the account from the vendor to Verizon Corp themself. Vendors don't like to lose those accounts.
It is clear from the Verizon Corporate people I spoke with today that it IS PROPER for any individual or primary data account to get the deal. The only account without a voice plan is a 2nd or multiple data account where there is a 2nd or more user on the same plan as the primary user. There only the primary user would qualify for the discount (of course a multi-account already has other discounts).
Stand up for your rights people. You have a contract. You have the RIGHT to the terms offered under that contract. If the contract is confusing then the law provides that it is to be construed in favor of the CUSTOMER and against the party that wrote the contract (Verizon). In this case Verizon certainly has shown at least some confusion and denied the terms to some (or conversely they would say thru confusion they gave the terms to some that shouldn't have gotten them). Even if the later claim that is clear proof that Verizon loses under the law. If their own terms are confusing enough to make some of their own employees believe someone is entitled to the plan then by law everyone in the same boat is indeed entitled to the plan.
I hope this clears things up. There is no gray area. If you are not a sole or the primary user on a data plan then you are entitled to the $59.99 rate. Don't let them try to extend you for 2 years either. Depending on where in the contract cycle you are there will be no extension at all or a 1 year extension from the date your lower rate takes effect. _________________ Did you ever stop to think .... and then forgot to start again? |

Oops, strike that "not" .... If you ARE a sole or the primary user on a data plan then you are entitled to the $59.99 rate. _________________ Did you ever stop to think .... and then forgot to start again? |

I just called and got my plan switched to the lower rate. The rep checked with technical support b/c she thought it might mean National Access only for $59.99 but tech support told her no, it's still Broadband & National Access for the lower rate, as long as I agreed to a one-year extension of my contract (I had 7 months left).
Thanks to all of you but especially to boater805 for the great information and advice!

P.S. I think I have a business account--I'll check my printed bill and edit this post later if I'm remembering wrong. |

| What is the name of the plan to ask for when lowering the price to 59.99 with voice plan? I recently did it and my website account shows the plan as glocalaccess broadband. However, I have recently read articles about globalacccess being a data service on the global scale so I was wondering if this was some mistake. Thanks for the help |

Wow...John was like a brick wall. Then I spoke to Danyail. Things were going so well. She found a code which would allow me to swich from $80 per month to $59, but after finding her computer terminal would not comply with her request she read the fine print: VOICE PLAN REQUIRED and nothing I could say could persuade her to give me the new contract. Then there was Angel, who was to the point in letting me know I would not be getting anywhere with her. Joanne had a hispanic accent. I told her what I told the others; that I was informed I could "call this number and get my rate lowered". In so many words she told me the 2 yr contract at $59 per month would be mine and she mentioned nothing about a voice plan requirement. She said I would get a letter in the mail confirming the reduced plan rate in about 7-10 days. No muss, no fuss. I sure hope I get that letter...
In my case my present Verizon contract expires December 1st of this year.
I suppose certain reps may be just assumming we have voice plans and check the appropriate tab on the computer terminal, and some do not. Just a hunch.
Here's a tip; one of them gave an extention number. Sorry, I guess I was so surprised at the ease of getting my new contract that I did not think to ask Joanne's ext. number. Perhaps those who are successful can post the Rep's name and extension number. Then when you get a rep just have him/her transfer you! _________________ Sony T250 1.2 Ghz & 17" Powerbook 1.5 Ghz |

Hey urrl78,
Great story! I had to chuckle as you went through all the reps.
Persistence DOES payoff.
Thanks for the post,

OK, got the $59.99, but it was a struggle...
I tried again. The CSA realized that I was in VA, and said VA law said I can sign a new contract to supersede the old one at a different rate, and that she could give me $59.99 with a new 2 year contact (I was only 2-3 months in to a 2 year contract, so, no biggie.)
She started working on it and then she realized I needed a voice plan to go with it. Damn.. so I asked, what about if I buy a second card? She said no. I explained I needed 2 cards total now (which I did/do) so I would be buying another anyway, and that Sprint just called me and offered their card for free with a 2 year $59.99/month plan (which they did just a few days ago.) ... and if I get one card from them I may just get 2, and cancel the service on this card because even after the early termination I'd still save money on the plan and have a used card to sell.
I must have said the magic word the CSA put me on hold, came back and transferred me to telesales and they set me up.. with one problem, I would have to go to a Verizon store to sign the paperwork. The telesales CSA noted my account with all the details and off I went.
I directly drove the 2 miles to the verizon store in Reston Town Center and explained to the rep there the deal. He refused to believe they were giving me $59.99 without a voice plan. I told him to look it up. He wouldn't. Luckily, his manager would and did. They found the notes and wrote up the 'manual contract' (their words). It took them over an hour to do all their paperwork... the rep could not have gone any slower and kept getting little details like my address wrong.
I walked out of the VZW store with 24 months at $59.99 * 2, second PC card should arrive at my office tomorrow |

I had the $79.99 broadband plan.
When I asked for the new pricing, I was told by a CSR I would get the new pricing plan for broadband but instead they changed me to the National Access plan (without broadband) for $59.99 / month. |
