Ok here's the long and short of it...
I currently have an WISP and I'm not happy with the service (outside of DSL / cable area).
EVDO rev is in my area, but I am near the fringe and signal strength is low to very low. I have no clue how to see my db lvl, I'm in Canada and using the Bell Connect software which sucks and a db level is no where to be found...but at least we finally have a semi unlimited plan up here.
I can get as high as 500kps-600 down and 100+ up (with a decent 100ms ish ping), which I'm fine with but my connection spikes and I drop from "low" to "very low".
I live in a treed area and I do have a large tower (about 50 feet high) which clears the tree line, but it's about 200feet from my house. I currently have gel filled cat 5 running to the tower as it has my wisp radio antenna on it (not sure if cat 5 could be used somehow in an amp / antenna rig).
I don't need break neck speed, I currently get about 300kps down with my wisp, but I'd like a consistant connection and a semi solid under 200ms ping.
Would an antenna / Amp combo help (mounted on my roof)? Or should I be looking at a larger solution using the tower?....I'm worried about the db loss with the long cable run.
I'm using a Novatel U720. |

I'm assuming you have an EVDO Rev. A connection and the tower you connect to has the capacity to deliver better than a 600 kbps download.
Just purchase your amp and antenna from a store that has a decent return policy in case the solution doesn't work for you.
I have the Wilson amp that they sell at the 3G Store and a very basic antenna that I use when I'm (mobile) in fringe areas. I'd highly recommend that amp to anyone in your position but would likely recommend a different antenna like the Wilson trucker antenna with built in ground plane. Call the 3G store they'll set you up with the right equipment and if it doesn't work for you, it is my understanding that they have a good return policy. |

| Thank you for the help. I am on Rev A...I'll try and find a good store with a return policy (3g doesn't seem to ship to Canada sadly, but I've emailed). |

Ok got my hands on a Wilson trucker antenna...sadly 3g doesn't ship to Canada.
I went from a signal fading in and out to 1000kps down and 500kps up.
Pings all under 150ms.
Gotta say thank you to these boards. I'm glad I stumbled across them. Now I can stop paying 110$ a month for 3gig with my local ISP. |

That is great news Bagock thanks for sharing your success story!

FYI, Novatel has a generic connection manager that works for the U720 have a look at the following thread. Kongster posted in the thread that the generic connection manager worked better for his U720 than the Verizon connection manager.

Sweet, I'll have to give the other software a try this weekend when I have some time to play.
As for location, I'm not too far from Barrie (using a U720), but in an area just outside of DSL, cable and Rogers / Bell portable internet service.
Next step is to get myself up and running on a K1 router:') |

| I run my Bell Kyocera 650 or my VZW V620 or my VZ U720 through my KR1. Works great. I have EVDO (although weak) here near Erin. |
