I have 20 years working in an engineering environment, and spent a number of years as a field engineer in the area of computer networking, specifically TCP/IP. ...oh and I tend not to use spell checkers.

Oh, and btw, I've about 15 years of sales and marketing experience at the executive level.

My point was not to trash the technology, but its implementation and its marketing, which I have backed up. The next time Lionel builds a new guage of track and forgets to make a train for it, I'll complain about them too.

I have high hopes for REV A EVDO. I'm not a pessamist, I am an optimist...who has not yet arrived.

I think when most say EVDO they are referring to EVDO rev 0 which is the initial common flavor. EVDO Rev A is the next step with higher bandwidth which we are all waiting impatiently for our moguls to get. So yes "EVDO" (rev0) is different from EVDO rev A but both are EVDO (IMT-2000 standard# TIA-856.) Kinda like wireless networking in PCs and notebooks IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n you got at home, work, hotspots, whatever (which the mogul has too Very Happy)

From my understanding EVDO rev A is a attained with a compatible chipset in your device as well as the carrier upgrading the towers themselves in your area (could be as simple as sliding an upgraded rev A board in.)

It's bad enough that we don't have Rev A on moguls yet but there is talk of a rev B using multi-channels to attain 4.9Mbps - 14.7Mbps burst (gotten from wikipedia so it's not my BS if it is BS.)

Now let's all sack Antilles for the bad news regarding the firmware update being revoked.

Yup. Let's sack Antilles for his bad news . . . . . that he posted nearly 3 months ago?

There is actually a newly cooked ROM for the Mogul/PPC6800 that has been out a few days on another forum that many are reporting has enabled not only Rev A but GPS as well. Way cool update IMO.

I vote:

EVDO any and all implementations, revisions, etc.

EVDO -150 upload speeds under 150

EVDO +150 upload speeds over 150

Or

EVDO PCMCIA (-150)
EVDO ExpressCard (+150)
EVDO USB (+150)
EVDO Built In (-150)

and finally

EVDO dormant
EVDO connected

Here is the latest from Sprint:

Quote:
Many of you may have heard that a version of the forthcoming PPC-6800 ROM (Read Only Memory) that enables GPS and EVDO REVA has been leaked onto the internet and subsequently there may be some customer interest in acquiring this update.

Please understand that this is an unsupported version of the ROM.
The ROM on these sites was "leaked" and is not authorized for any Sprint devices. The leaked version continues to be discussed on industry sites and in the blogs. If your customers decide to DL/use/test this ROM, Sprint has no ability to support their devices if a problem should arise. We don't know what bugs testing will reveal; it's safe to say that early releases of anything will need some tweaks. Many of our business customers want to be sure that a software or firmware release from Sprint is free of as many quirks as possible. Customers considering downloading this unapproved update should be advised of the situation and warned of the risks, as well as informed of our plans for release of a supported and tested version.

The last time this happened, it was a version for another Windows Mobile device. The "new patch" caused earpiece squeal and old problems to return to a phone, which in turn caused more problems with updates to some customers. Untested software can and will cause problems on handsets.

The official Sprint position with expected official version release timeframe is below:

Sprint is developing a software update for the Mogul by HTC to enable EV-DO Rev. A and GPS capability and anticipates making this available to customers in March. When the final version of the software is fully tested and ready for customer use, it will be posted on the authorized software download websites (www.america.htc.com/mogulupdate or www.sprint.com/downloads )

Only officially distributed versions of the software are supported by Sprint and customers are strongly encouraged only to download versions from these authorized websites. Any unauthorized versions may contain code that could have malicious intent or cause performance problems with devices.

There are some discussions in other threads that Sprint is releasing a new Rev A firmware for the Mogul today. On the Sprint web site as of 8:37am CST, the only version is 2.17.651.0, which is NOT the Rev A firmware.

Sprint PPC6800 Mogul Cell Phone Is First to Use Faster EVDO Rev-A Broadband Network

NEW YORK (AP) -- Sprint Nextel Corp. is upgrading one of its cell phone models so that it can connect to a faster data network, doubling its download speeds and boosting upload speeds by about eight times.

Both Sprint and Verizon Wireless operate so-called EV-DO Rev. A networks, but have used them only for laptop cards. Their fastest phones have used the older and slower EV-DO Rev. 0 network.

Sprint said Monday it was releasing a software update for the PPC6800 Mogul phone, made by HTC Corp. of Taiwan, that will enable the phone to connect at Rev. A speeds. Downloads speeds should be 600 kilobits per second to 1,400 kbps, up from a range of 400 kbps to 700 kbps with Rev. 0. It will be capable of uploads of 350 to 500 kbps, up from 50 kbps to 70 kbps.

Sprint said its broadband network now covers 234 million people, and the vast majority of it has been upgraded to EV-DO Rev. A, short for Evolution-Data Optimized Revision A.

The Mogul is a smart phone that runs Windows Mobile software and can be used as a modem for a laptop. It costs $199.99 with a two-year contract and went on sale in June. The software update will be available immediately from HTC's site.

Verizon Wireless has not announced a phone using Rev. A. Spokeswoman Brenda Raney said the main advantage of Rev. A is higher upload speeds, which is important to laptop users but less so for cell-phone users.

AT&T Inc. already sells phones that use its fastest network technology, known as HSDPA, for High-Speed Downlink Packet Access. Its listed download speed is the same as EV-DO Rev. A, with a slightly higher upload speed.

Exchanging emails with the HTC folks, they hinted that the software update will be posted later today.

Detailed instructions on backing up data on your device and installing the software update are posted on HTC's support website. The software is also posted at this website: www.america.htc.com/mogulupdate

*** Warning ***

Read the installation directions carefully.

When doing the firmware upgrade, ALL the data on your Mogul will be erased, so make sure that ActiveSync performs a backup BEFORE doing the upgrade. After your Rev A firmware is installed, all your data should be restored.

First tests:

- Google Maps works great http://www.google.com/gmm/
- Telenav on Mogul works.
- Sprint Software Store (Not sure if this was working before - not a big deal)

I will report on Rev A speed tests later.

Kind of goofy, there is no "EVDO Rev A" indicator, just the same "EVDO" indicator at the top of the screen.

My first speed tests have been something of a letdown. In general download speeds are down. On rev O I was averaging above 1400, and often over 2000, although upload speeds were pathetic.

Now, download speeds are the same or slower: 1300 or less, although upload speeds are encourage 3 to 5 times rev O.

Pings are also a disapppointment. I don't see a bit of difference. I wonder if its because I'm in Naples FL and my HA is inCleveland?

Anyway, you'd think it would still be lower than rev O.
BTW, when I do separate ping tests to popular sites like yahoo.com I do get sub 200 pings. I believe voip is possible and practical with sub 2oo pings IF there is substantive consistancy...there is delay, but clarity, much like an old style long distance call...acceptable...or it should be.

I've got it installed, and have tried using it with WMWiFiRouter. I'm getting similar results. Downloads are about the same, and uploads are about 3x faster.

I tried the GPS "TeleNav" application, and when I asked it to show my current location here in NYC, it was off by a full block.

I'm pretty happy though simply to get the improved upload speed.

One other thing worth noting is that this ROM recognizes all 8GB of my 8GB micro SDHC card, whereas the ROM which shipped with my phone only saw 4GB.
