Yes, you can buy a card on e-bay and then have Alltel activate it. The nice part about buying the card outright is that you will not have to be under contract.
As for the best combination -- are you always going to use the card with the router? Or do you travel with a laptop and want to use the card directly in your laptop? Does your laptop have an Express Card slot or a PCMCIA slot?
FWIW, I have the 5750/Linksys router combination and am very happy with it. |

Thanks Karlyn
As for best combo I was interested in which combo works the best together. I will use the card separately and also at home as part of the home network.
On the question of buying the card outright. Don't you still have to be under contract for the EDVO service from Alltel? Or perhaps you're saying you don't need to do the 2 year agreement with them. If that's the case that would be fantastic!
Thanks again.

Should have phrased that contract response a bit better -- you'll still have to subscribe to Alltel's data plan but only on a month-to-month basis if you buy your card outright. You can also activate the card over the phone without having to go to a store.
I was trying to avoid that "best" combo question. My opinion only, but if I was in your position today I'd go with either the PC5750 and the Linksys or I'd go with the KPC680 and the Cradlepoint router (with the USB adapter). The other option might be the KPC680 now and wait on the router until the KR2 comes out.
I know some folks have had success with the KPC680/Novatel adapter/KR1 and some have had success with the PC5750 and the KR1 but there are also others that have had problems with those combos, so I'm not real comfortable with either.
Does your laptop have a PCMCIA slot or an Express Card slot (or both)? |

Thanks again Karlyn. One PC has both and the other lap tops have PCMCIA. Not a big hurry here on this now so I have time for things to settle out. I did hear from a guy that sells Altel cards that Alltel is no longer selling the KPC680. He had one and after that no more. Of course lots on EBay.
Appreciate the help!

Ron | Hhmmmmmm . . . . . . Alltel still has the KPC680 available online and they still have them in the stores in my area. I seriously doubt they'll quit selling them any time soon since it's their only express card and the only problem with them has been their compatibility with the KR1 for some people. But then I have been wrong before . . . . |

Big Dave
Only repeating what I was told when I returned the one card I was trying. Have no idea if its correct or not. Like you I found it hard to believe since its a current card!

I now have the Alltel Kyocera KPC680 working with my MacBookPro running Mac OS X 10.5.1 (Leopard) as well as running on a Kyocera KR1 router. It took some serious jumping through hoops on the Mac and then on the router to make it all work, but everything's connecting and running fine.
I'm getting downloads of about 700kbps inside a building with no external antenna. I have an external antenna on order to see if I can boost that. |

| I have the KPC680 too. Which external antenna did you buy and from where? Thanks! |
