How do I know whether I'm at 850 or 1900 mhz?

I have both the USB720 and an LG VX8700 phone. I know how to get to the service/field test menus on both.

I can achieve an EVDO connection, but I don't know how to figure out whether I am connecting at the 850mhz band or the 1900mhz band. What figures should I be looking at?

The channel is reported as 325 but don't know if this has anything to do with band.

I'd like to know this when considering a single-band antenna.

thanks!

Does Sprint run any native 800mhz service? I thought it was all 1900 with roaming on other's 800 and 1900 networks.

Sorry, to clarify, I am on Verizon. My understanding is that they run both frequencies, but I don't know how to determine which I'm connected to.

325 is usually a PCS channel.

Here's some reference graphs:

http://tk.com/wireless/1900pcs.html - 1900MHz CDMA PCS Band

No need to apologize -- you posted in the "Verizon EVDO Service" forum.

Perhaps this isn't the most definitive list but the Field Test Modes here
http://www.wpsantennas.com/pdf/testmode/FieldTestModes.pdf
might help you identify the band and channel as well as the PN and other more specific information.

I know you indicated that you had access to service modes but service modes on the devices I have seen have indicated the band as well, using ##DEBUG#. I think this includes my U720

Hey thebordella, did you ever get any further with this inquiry? I have the same question, and my (unactivated) Verizon phone doesn't give band information in service mode, either.

n6gn, is this in fact true of your U720's service mode, did you ever check? As I mentioned above, my cell phone's service mode doesn't. I'm trying to get this information for my area as well before I try reopening an EVDO account (having gotten an antenna at least somewhat together beforehand) and it aint proving easy.

Based on the consistency with which my Verizon modem and phone connect on channel 325 in this area, and the channel charts posted by another member earlier in this thread, it seemed logical to conclude that I am receiving 1900 (PCS) service. 325 is a PCS channel.

While that's still not an official conclusion, I'm satisfied with it Very Happy

Well, I looked and didn't see the band, 850 or 1900, explicitly mentioned in the service display. THere is a lot of information about the specific signal, pilot, strength, etc but the nearest thing I see to RF center frequency is in the channel information.

It looks to me like the way to deduce the band from the service screen on these types of displays is to look at the channel number. The link above http://tk.com/wireless/ in this thread has a very nice explanation of how channel numbers got assigned (pretty messy for 850 MHz) and from that I think you can tell where you are operating with pretty high confidence. Notice also the special note about Verizon CDMA channels on 850 MHz.

In general the 850 MHz channels are 30 KHz( .03 MHz) wide and the PCS ones are 50 khz wide. This tends to make the PCS ones land on channel multiples of 25 (25 * .05 MHz = 1.25 MHz which fits a single CDMA carrier, either 1xRTT or EVDO). So if your display shows a channel evenly divisable by 25, you are probably on PCS.

I guess that it is assumed the (service) user already knows this. All this is only my interpretation and perhaps someone else can confirm or correct my guess.

Assuming that this is actually the LG VX8700, sold by Verizon, have you tried the instructions for other LG phones listed at http://www.wpsantennas.com/pdf/testmode/FieldTestModes.pdf yet?

Although the newest LG phone I see listed is the 8500, LG seems to have mainained the same access over quite a few models...
