Please Help Connection problem with Linksys Router

Ok i recently recieved a WRT5AG wireless Linksys router. I have DSL connection I have a Westell Modem. I tried installing router and modem togeather. ( i checked to make sure they were plugged in perfectly and all lights that were on were supposed to be on) and i got no internet connection even though all lights wre on on both modem and router. KEEP IN MIND I AM RUNNING THROUGH A WIRED CONNECTION. Someone said the IP addresses might be interfering but i need help. If that is possibly the problem can someone tell me how to solve it and if it isnt the proble can someone help me out PLEASE thank you
