Unfortunately it may never happen. Verizon may slowly migrate to LTE in 3-5 years and Sprint will slowly migrate to WiMAX. EVDO will be around for many years but RevC/UMB may not happen. They seemed to have rushed out the release of the document after the Verizon statement. Who knows, Verizon may change their tune as they haven't committed to LTE yet.
LTE is looking to get 100Mbps in a few years (if the carriers have enough spectrum to do it). WiMAX may eventually hit 1Gbps with 802.16m in a few years and Sprint/Clearwire do have enough spectrum to do it, though that kind of speed will probably only be available for backhaul to other sites.
In the meantime, EVDO RevA is still viable for a couple more years and on cellphones, it will be adequate for many years. |

Am surprised to see Verizon make a committed selection before the 700mhz auction. If they don't win much 700mhz spectrum, I wonder where they'll use LTE?
Qualcomm (and the RevC camp) must be defecating bricks. Now that Sprint's WiMAX direction is sorta kinda in question but not really, if they'll be pressured by stockholders to do LTE as well.
If Sprint sticks with WiMAX long term and CDMA diminishes in 15 years, that would really separate Sprint as more of a data company. |
