I've been having mostly slow downloads the last few days or weeks.

This evening, after testing download speeds for 1/2 hour or so (all slow for dialup!), I spent 1/2 hour on the phone with Verizon tech support, only to be told:
(1) We don't support the Sierra 5220 card on a PowerBook.
(2) If you had a Kyocera 650 card, we could escalate the trouble ticket, because the 650 with a PowerBook has been newly supported.
(3) If you have a PC, we can work with you and the Sierra 5220 card.

I told Verizon that intermittent fast downloads indicate that the problem is not with the computer, but with their network. The guy I talked with said my PRL wasn't up to date.

So I googled "Kyocera 650," to see about buying one, if that was the only way to make this work faster than slow dialup. http://www.Booster-Antenna.com came up in the search results. (I bought my Sierra 5220 and booster antenna from y'all.)

I thought, hey, let's see what the site has to offer. I found the current Verizon PRL version number and a description of how PRLs work. I found a picture of a screen I have on my computer system, with the PRL version number circled.

So I fired off an email to Mike here, basically steamed with Verizon and the situation in general:

Hi,

I just spent a chunk of time on the phone with Verizon tech support. Mostly slow connections, occasional fast connections. Verizon tech said 650 is now supported for Mac (as of a few days ago), if I had 650 they could escalate the trouble ticket, but as is, I'm sol.

They said the problem is I need to update the PRL. Browsing the site, I see I need to plug into a PC, so the VZ software can do that. Problem is, I don't have that access at present.

Suggestions? Is there a way I can update the PRL using the PowerBook?

Thanks,

FIVE MINUTES later, I got a reply from <mike@EVDOinfo.com>:

See for the answer, you do NOT need a PC, you can do it on your Mac.

http://www.evdoinfo.com/Tips/PC_5220/Current_PRL_Version_for_EVDO_Access_2005051056/

Hold down the OPTION key while clicking on the signal strength and you will see ACTIVATE CARD, select it and that will update your PRL.

Cost for this advice, post your story on EVDOforums.com, let others know:

- we support macs
- we know what we are doing
- Verzion Tech Support doesn't really support macs

Let me know how it goes for you.

So, I updated the PRL. (Gee, for $80/month, why can't Verizon at least know to say "hold down the option key?")

My estimate is that my average download speed is much faster, but there was still a batch of slow downloads mixed in. Twelve CNET Bandwidth Meter speed tests since <EVDOinfo> help, about 3 hours ago. 2 fast: 363-666 kbps; then 6 slow: 26.4-71 kbps, then 4 fast, and I'd had enough testing.

At this point, I'm not fully thrilled with it as "plug n play," but I do understand that you've gotta screw around with this crap a bit to get it to work.

If I were gonna do it again, I'd have gotten a Kyocera 650 rather than a 5220 card, but we didn't know Verizon was going to support the 650 on the PowerBook, and the 5220 does work with stock Tiger very nicely.

Time will tell if the frequent slow connections become fewer. However, it was clearly helpful to learn how to update the PRL.

Mike, thanks for your help. The rest of you in the world out there, you do get extra value buying from http://www.booster-antenna.com/. I don't know if Verizon's tech support is better on the PC side, but on the Mac side, I think you'd be crazy not to buy here, because the information resource and assistance (for customers) would be worth more, and the site actually provides a small discount in price.

Excellent service!

Gordon Houtman

Gordon, glad to be of assistance.

For anyone that discovers this thread on Updating PRL PC5220 from the search engines, here is additional information if you have a Audiovox / Sierra PC5220 and need to update the PRL on a PowerBook.

While clicking on the signal strength indicator in the menu bar hold down the Option Key and you will see this:

The last two options you only see when the option key is pressed.

Select Activate Card... and this will update your PRL (Preferred Roaming List), it takes a minute or two. If you PRL is not updated, you can be in the middle of a BroadbandAccess area and your card will only connect to NationalAccess.

For those running any card on Windows or those running KPC650 on Mac, when you Activate the card your PRL is automatically updated. Verizon updates the PRL every 3-4 months.

More info on PRL and Current PRL Version

Although this is correct in principal, the actual PRL version has been updated multiple times since May, 2005. Just do the "Activate Card..." - then you can't go wrong!
