Mac OS X Leopard 10.5 will be available next month.

This thread will discuss EVDO Card compatibility with Leopard.

Before upgrading to Mac OS X 10.5, please visit this thread to see if your card is supported. OR, check this thread, as it looks like Apple will be adding support for additional cards?

Like they did with 10.4.7 and WWAN drivers support

There many be compatibility issues or perhaps none.

More info in the coming weeks to be posted.

Looks like Leopard (10.5) will have the following built-in EVDO / HSDPA support:

Thanks, mods, for getting this thread up. I am hopeful that Leopard has good support for EVDO and will make the decision to upgrade at least partly on that basis.

We have 3 people here 'playing' with Leopard over the coming days and we plan on testing all cards from Verizon & Sprint and have a better idea on compatibility.

By the way, if anyone does some early reporting on success/failure, please include:

- did you do a clean install of Mac OS X 10.5 or an upgrade (<- very important)

- Make & Model Mac you used

- Card tested

- Used Native 10.5 WWAN drivers or Verizon VZAccess Manager version or manufacturer connection software.

I just installed Mac OS 10.5 on my PowerBook G4 with a Verizon USB 727 REV "A" EVDO modem, and so far so good.

500 +/- down 500+/- up using WWAN modem script.

Just finished installing Leopard (upgrade) on my MacBook Pro, using a Verizon (Novatel) V740. Upon completing the install my card no longer worked. Ended up having to go into Network Preferences and deleting the several old Novatel CDMA port definitions there. Then re-booting prompted a fresh reconfiguration of the Novatel card. Worked fine after that. But...

interestingly, the icon in the menu bar at the top has changed. It no longer has the inside-out umbrella on the left side, nor the dual-paragraph thingies on the right side that indicate a connection. The actual icon selections, when you click on it (Turn Card Off, Connect/Disconnect, About Verizon Card, Open Network Preferences), are the same.

Now off to take a look at the rest of Leopard...

We are putting together some notes on all the different devices.

Briefly....

No problems with Sprint EX720 and Verizon V740 ExpressCards (Apple WWAN driver recognized and we see signal strength)

USB727/U727 - works with proper drivers and changing some settings (No WWAN Driver support)

U720/USB720 - works with proper drivers and changing some settings (No WWAN Driver support - previously HAD WWAN driver support, other techs here will confirm if they are seeing the same thing).

Franklin CDU-680. Some issues. We had to re-install Franklin Installer and change some settings. We are putting together a Leopard 10.5 Setup Guide for our customers. Wait until we have this available BEFORE installing 10.5.

Problems with VZAccess Manager recognizing any devices, however, this may not be too big a problem.

We are finishing our testing with AC597E / AC595 and others...

Here are speeds we got with a Sprint EX720 with 10.5 with 3 our of 5 bars of service:

Here is the native Leopard WWAN icon support that you will see in the menu bar:

Not necessary, all you need to do is uncheck this checkbox:

just like in 10.3 - 10.4. That removes the modem indicator in the menu bar.

I was not saying that was a way to get rid of it. I was letting people know that if you perform a clean install of Leopard and then install a EX720, you will have to add the modem indicator on your own.

Btw, have you actually tried to click on the modem status icon while it is in the menubar Michael? Because I did and it says 'No modem configurations were found". However, when I tethered my Sprint V3m Razr (which incidentally is officially/natively supported in iSync) via bluetooth, clicking on the phone icon gives me the option to connect using Sprint (the self-assigned name given by Leopard when I tethered my phone). Quite obviously, modem status is NOT related to the use of my EX720 anymore... and probably not used for anything but bluetooth tethered devices. Especially since:

1) it was not automatically enabled when my EX720 was setup by 10.5
2) Bluetooth is the only network service that has the option to display the modem status in the menubar.

If you do a clean install, Apple's WWAN items are there to be used but there is no port setup for the modem. When you insert the card, Apple's software should begin to install the port for you. I may be incorrect a bit if you are required to install the WWAN software separately rather than Leopard doing it automatically.

There are two icons you may see, the tower with 4 bars and the telephone with the 2 dots. The telephone icon will not appear unless you select the option to show it.

If you prefer the telco software, it will not be installed and you will have to use its cd.
