Did the computer automatically recognize the USB727 card without the vzaccess software? I can't seem to get my new MacBook to do that...

| Since I am seeing posts in other areas of the forum about the usb727 lack of native support and download speeds in the 200kbps range with the verizon drivers, can anyone confirm that the usb720 doesn't have the same issue in Leopard? Is it recognized by Leopard natively and have good download speeds? I can probably exchange the modem for a usb720 if it works correctly. Thanks in advance |

How do you know what your account is? Is it your account id on your bill? Sorry for all the emails. Trying to figure this out.

I have the dial string (#777) and the account, but not the password - don't recall ever setting it. Anybody know if there is a default password?
Thanks! |

[quote="avenger2000"]I can't get the usb727 to be recognized either by Leopard natively. I have to use vzaccess which is providing not so good download rates.
Thanks for the info...
I got a max DL of 456 using Vzaccess.
I know I have gotten much higher DL speeds on the Thinkpad.
I am in a somewhat remote location, so I will try the same DL on my MBP & Thinkpad tomorrow & post the DL speeds for comparison. |

| I guess what I am looking for, and I know this may be asking for much. Is for someone to go through the steps for setting up the Verizon usb727 natively on Leopard using the modem script. I got it out of the wwan update and put it in the library directory (was this correct?). What settings do you check off? What do you put under number (I assume my card's phone number), account, password? What is the vendor and type and any other options (dial string). I would really appreciate this. Thanks very much in advance! |

I wiped my drive and installed the new OS from scratch and once it was up an running I went ahead and configured my pantech card (Sprint). The set up was a little different (had to go into the advanced settings and selected Sprint/CDMA), entered #777 for the telephone number and I was able to connect.
However I am now having issues, when the computer goes to sleep or is closed I have to restart (have not tried logging out yet) in order to get the card to be recognized by the OS. Other posts that I have seen at the Apple forums have stated that they need to delete and reconfigure the card in order for it to work.
It was working great under X.4.x, so I am hoping that Apple will provide an update soon.
Thanks

|

This evening I decided to upgrade my macbook (not a pro) to Leopard, and I have a sprint u720.
Like a bonehead I didn't bother to look up any possible complications and dropped the cat into the drive.
Well, it got a little wacky, and I was getting messages like device not found, and tried to reload the drivers and got some kind of thing like this will not work on this computer. I even called sprint and the guy referred me back to the apple site.
Finally, I was resolved to staying up all night if I had to to get the dang thing working (even if I had to reinstall my previous system software, I LOVE MY CARD).
Well, I don't know how it finally happened, I was poking around through system prefs, rebooted, changed settings, and the thing automatically reformated and is working. It's like a rubiks cube, and I wish I had video on what fixed the problem but I don't.
Anyway, If you have the same hardware and upgrade to Leopard, just know you may have to fiddle a bit but I got mine working.....for now.....

Leopard Software Incompatibilities are being listed on various sites.
If you do install Leopard, be sure to run a full set of fixer-upers such as fixing permissions or do the complete Cocktail (be sure to get the Leopard version) suite of fixes. And shut down for a few minutes to clear out the memory and give yourself a chance to relax a bit.
Modems have memories so remove the device and let it sit for a bit with no power. This often fixes a user generated problem if you do a lot of command line changes since the modem will default to factory settings.
Since this is a serious change in the OS, most experienced consultants will wait a few months before installing on production computers that a business depends upon.
There are also issues being uncovered about root access and how Apple has changed to this. Filemaker and Adobe are installing serialnumberware that gains root access and may create vulnerabilities.
The glamor of the update doesn't compensate for serious dollar loss and time spent dealing with problems, for me. I'll wait a few months until the weeping dies out and Apple and software makers have updated.

SUCCESS
I have a MacBook with the following
Model Identifier: MacBook2,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.16 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 4 MB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MB21.00A5.B07
SMC Version: 1.17f0
I upgraded to leopard from tiger and did not have a wireless card previously. I went out and bought a sprint u727, the instructions it comes with do not work for the leopard os. I called Sprint and Called Apple for support neither one could help me. I happened to find this forum and searched for "sprint lepoard" it brought me to this forum. I noticed the image that is on the first page and you must change the vendor to novatel and then save and exit, the only difference is that the card is not recognized as a modem but a wwan card. After making that one change i click connect and off I go into the www. I failed to mention I installed the drivers that came with the card on the CD, the speed is fine and im happy. Apple recommended that I revert back to Tiger if I wanted to get the card working. I was very close to doing that luckily I found this site.
Good Luck everyone. |

That actually sounds a little like what I did in the prefs when I got it working.
I have to ask, did you need to activate the card initially on a windows computer? I did with the u720. Luckilly I did not have to reactivate when upgrading to Leopard. |

I was having the same problem with my Verizon USB727 with Leopard that some of you were having. I was able to get connected using the Verizon connection manager, but I was getting horribly slow download speeds. I was not able to get Leopard to natively support the modem either.
Here is the solution that worked for me.
First, go to (please add the w w w as I am unable to post links)
4.sprint.com/pcsbusiness/support/downloads/index.jsp?internalId=downloads
and select Mac OS and download the U727 drivers.
Next, double-click the package to install the sprint drivers.
When that is all done, insert your USB727 and let it recognize your card. Leopard will not automatically detect your card as a modem so there will be no pop-up messages or anything.
Now, go into System Preferences>Network and you should see on the left a Novatel CDMA entry. Click on it and then click on the Advanced button. Under the WWAN tab select Novatel from the Vendor drop-down and then just click OK. Don't worry about the model drop-down. Now, just click on the Apply button at the bottom and then click connect.
With this setup I am getting the same speeds that I do on my Windows machines. The only issue is that there is no indicator in the menu bar to show signal strength or even that your are connected so you will have to connect/disconnect from within System Preferences>Network.
I hope this works for all of you who are in the same boat I am until someone figures something better out, or at least how to get a status icon in the menu bar. |

|

Has anyone had any luck getting the Franklin CDU-680 working with Mac OS X Leopard? I've plugged in into my MacBook Pro, installed the included software, restarted the Mac, and ... nothing. The EVDO card doesn't show up anywhere in Network Preferences, and starting the CDU 680 Status application doesn't seem to help either.
While I suppose this result isn't wholly unexpected, any advice is appreciated. |

|
|
I have an iBook G4 that I carry with me everywhere for email. I will be getting a new MBP when the 13" gets the LED backlight. Until then, I am using the EX720 (EXpressCard) with a Novatel XUA-1 EXpressCard-to-USB converter.
Only one of the usb connections is actually necessary; the second is if you have a weak signal, it will boost the power to the card. I have never noticed any difference.
When I installed Leopard (upgrade from 10.4.10, not clean install) the card stopped working. I did not really have time to play with it until today. Thanks to sihaigit's advice on this forum, I deleted the old (Novatel) configuration in Network Prefs and rebooted with the card plugged in. I went to Network Prefs and saw that OSX had recognized the card as WWAN. I changed the WWAN setting to EVDO, selected Novatel, and clicked Connect. Voila! I didn't even enter any login name, password or #777. I then rebooted again without the card plugged in. Then plugged it in and it is recognized fine in Network Prefs. It works great. It's nice having the signal strength since I could not get the older Tiger driver to work with my somewhat kludged setup. I have a full-strength signal and just got 535K down, 394K up.
The only thing is, I cannot figure out how to get it to display in the menubar modem icon. It's just not there. And I cannot find a checkbox in Prefs to enable it in menubar.
Jeff

Thank you for this - worked just the same with the Novatel U720 and Sprint...solved a huge problem, many thanks |
