Verizon Wireless to join Vodafone in upgrade to LTE
CDMA to lose major backer
By Kelly Hill
Verizon Wireless and Vodafone Group plc will both use Long Term Evolution technology as the 4G evolution path for their respective networks, according to remarks by company executives this week.
Arun Sarin, CEO of Vodafone, and Verizon Communications Inc. chairman and CEO Ivan Seidenberg, spoke about the technology choice at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia conference yesterday. Vodafone and Verizon control Verizon Wireless through a joint venture.

I wonder what spectrum Verizon will use? They probably don't have enough spectrum in 800/1900mhz to do 4G and will have to maintain CDMA for many years during deployment and lifecycling CDMA out with users. And the 700mhz spectrum is being chopped up so much there won't be much room for 4G, maybe only 10mhz per market. They may go to LTE but don't expect it to be high performing unless they find spectrum.
Sprint/Clearwire have around 100mhz avg in 2.5Ghz per market for WiMAX. Plenty of room to do very high speeds. Getting backhaul to the towers will be the challenge.
WiMAX has a much better opportunity to get into consumer electronic devices like gameboys/PSP, cameras, GPS devices, cars, etc. LTE will likely be limited to phones and laptop cards - and then there is the spectrum issue for the States. ATT may also not have enough spectrum to do high performing LTE either.
I'm surprised Qualcomm stock hasn't sunk. They are screwed. |

So that others don't have to go searching online too far, I'll paste a blurb i read on DSLreports.com earlier:
| Quote: | | "3GPP LTE (Long Term Evolution) technology is theoretically capable of speeds up to 100Mbps, with latency as low as 20ms. It's also going to be AT&T's preferred flavor moving forward, though implementation is obviously a long way off. Vodafone CEO Arun Sarin tells Reuters that LTE won't even begin seeing use until at least 2010, and complete integration of Vodafone and Verizon Wireless platforms probably won't happen until 2015." |
